On another note altogether, is there a toilet at the top of that massive tower, does anyone know? Imagine being all the way up there watching the race and needing the facilities....
Nope and I know the elevator in it has been broken for about forever.

Ha! Thanks. Gawd that would be awful. Credit to anyone that wants to walk up there, but I bet the view of the track is wonderful. (Assuming you may then know first hand?)

I have pro motorsports photo friends. Clients often want a shot at some point up there (say a race start or even a cool pan) but it’s a commitment because getting up and down eats most of a session.

Most of them also hate photographing COTA. Poor sight lines / framing, need big lenses, and a PITA to get around to shot areas.

Interesting- thanks! Yeah, I think I'd not want to lug my gear all the way up or down there either TBH. Shame the circuit isn't more photo friendly.

Bottas in a league of his own in the second sector. Must be running lower df and is a rocket down the straight.

Looking at the onboards from my untrained eye, max struggling to turn the car in the slow portion of s3. The Merc looks like it's on rails there comparatively.

Seems like it will be another qualifying that relies on keeping your tyres alive in the first sector to go fast in the last sector
From the BBC,

"A lot of overheating, on the rears particularly," is Hamilton's early assessment

You get less of a penalty the more components you take so I believe in this instance 5 is accurate.

This is a problem in about every series here.

When MotoAmerica (US / FIM Superbikes) had a special, gumball, qualifying rear from Dunlop, they were slower for this reason alone.

23.2 b
Should a driver use more than the numbers set in a) above of any one of the elements
during a Championship, a race grid place penalty will be imposed upon him at the first

Event during which each additional element is used. Penalties will be applied according
to the following table and will be cumulative:

The first time an additional element is used: Ten (10) grid place penalty.

The next time an additional element of the same type is used: Five (5) grid place penalty.

If a driver incurs a penalty exceeding fifteen (15) grid places he will be required to start
the race from the back of the starting grid.

Any of the seven (7) elements will be deemed to have been used once the car’s timing
transponder has shown that it has left the pit lane.

During any single Event, if a driver introduces more than one of the same power unit
element which is subject to penalties, only the last element fitted may be used at
subsequent Events without further penalty.
