I agree. Once there is a smooth flow with minimal low speed corners it basically benfits a car to have lots of power to crank on the downforce.

They were a few tenths behind in Sochi from making Q3, realistically I think they can find about .3 seconds from the chassis, only everyone else will have improved by roughly the same margin. So they'll be agonizingly closer but not quite yet from making it to Q3 on merit. They do have better race pace so I think they can finish in the points.

But Soschi is a power track, as were Barcelona is less so.
Maybe because of that, they could reach Q3?

I agree. Sochi was theoretically a bad track for McLaren and they werent far from reaching Q3, so why not in Barcelona?

A few weeks ago I put a stopwatch on the 2015 pole lap. Around 35 seconds full throttle, 41% of the lap. Braking was 18%.

I would suggest that the 100kg limit isn't too much of an issue here and so adding downforce/drag would seem a likely use of excess power.

JB is a glass half empty guy, a bit of un-reliability and his head dips.
Take heart from Alonso, he looked quicker than JB all day.
I think they are making progress race by race building to the 4th season in the partnership.

I think Honda turned up the engine a bit in the Quali...Their top speed was never higher than 326 in the Practise sessions. Button 329 in Quali.
