Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I always feel kinda sorry for him, seems like a really nice guy, but boy he must have one of the most difficult jobs in F1.

Many McLaren fans prefer to stay with honda next year because the only realistic option is 3rd best engine on the grid.
If McLaren have another option to get Mercedes engine, I seriously doubt (most) fans prefer McLaren to stay with honda.

Well Zak just said the most ideal scenario would be to remain with Honda and for them to supply other teams also.
"We are starting to see some good light at the end of the tunnel now with Honda, we just need to make sure that light is getting brighter and that tunnel is getting shorter."

The happy frenchy Eric Boulier said in a interview a few minutes ago to F1 Latin America that for sure there will be no decision about the future of their engine supplyer this weekend.

Looks more and more than Honda may have a chance to continue with McLaren.

and this is the point where I say that what is being called back pressure is not really back pressure ......

if the induction pressure is 4 bar and the exhaust pressure is 5 bar that's back pressure
if the induction pressure is 4 bar and the exhaust pressure is 4 bar that's not back pressure
if the induction pressure is 4 bar and the exhaust pressure is 1 bar that's forward pressure

the back pressure mystique comes from NA where in most driving (because it's throttled) there's back pressure (useful for control of course)
I am assured that car turbos do not have back pressure

because of the MGUH F1 can have back pressure, neutral pressure and forward pressure
Nicely put TC.

It is common for turbo cars to have "back pressure" (using your definition) - particularly so in the early days. Wastegate controlled SI turbo cars often have a smaller than optimum turbine housing both to accelerate the turbo (reducing lag) and to start boosting at lower engine revs.

Of course during throttled operation a turbo car is no different to NA - having below atmospheric in the intake ports and above atmospheric in the exhaust.

I feel sorry for the mods who have to moderate this thread.
I just feel sorry for myself. It seems every time I come back to this thread there are three interesting new posts and 20 pages of BS to sift through just to find them.

The posters are talking about everything else but the actual technical details. Mostly speculation, politics, technobabble and laughing at speed trap figures and engine blow outs.

Vandoorne had a MGU-K failure in Q3, he will need a new power unit.

McLaren will dump Honda regardless of Torro Rosso.

Very disappointing to lose an engine, a few minor upsides (1) not the MGU-H again, think this is an upside, despite it being a second area that failed, these failures are much less frequent than the MGU-H failures have been so there's progress on that front, (2) the 3.7 spec gets a test, (3) the broken part may well be fixable, so the engine may be available for later races if required. Yes, that's trying to put a good spin on a failure, which does rather overwhelm these points.
