Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Sounds fun, but that's probably one of the oldest tricks in the book. It's really being overhyped; The rear squats under speed. We've already spotted the same thing on the Red Bull earlier this season, and before that as well.

The Mercedes CLR that ran at the Le Mans Air Show in 1999 used the same trick to reduce drag.
Williams had it in 1991 with their active suspension. A squad button on the wheel.
This seems to be a fined tuned suspension that compresses quite a lot under the load of the downforce, when there is no rolling motion.

Williams did it with a hydraulic suspension.

This has been done with a traditional type damper / spring suspension for 25 years.

This "ride height device" is exactly what Mark Hughes recently described in an article (taken with a pinch of salt) about Red Bull recently, is it not? So potentially what's being suggested here is Mercedes have moved their car more towards a higher rake setup?

I think Scarbs explains it quite well in this thread

He did. It’s old tech that the working group has continued to allow.

The working group is the teams.

This is movable aero in the same manner as the TMD, and should be banned for all teams immediately...

I think this is being terribly overblown. None of this is new and teams have known about this for a long time. What I think Mercedes have hit on is how it works with their own aerodynamics. It appears they have got around the rake performance issues they had at the start of the season. They're obviously quite confident in this.

Ban all suspension movement then...

That's just it, I have no idea how you would 'ban' this. It's all suspension.

There is nothing to ban, this isn't even new. Why are Sky acting like it's some new big invention?

It is extracurricular use of the suspension system, specifically moving for aero benefit.

Just like the TMD...

New audiences + hype + Paul di Resta + the general fan's memory is only one race weekend long.

If only downforce is changing the ride height and stalls the diffuser it's in compliance with the rules.
10.2.4 Any powered device which is capable of altering the configuration or affecting the
performance of any part of any suspension system is forbidden.
