No no, it's the wind, all cars were slower on main and back straights. So far RB19 and RB20 are mostly matched on drag when using same wing levels. RB20 is harvesting more though, so sometimes doesn't reach the same top speed figures.

It's rear wind in the esses and degner as well affecting the speeds. It's just the RB19 was already amazing in high speed last year, whereas other cars had more to make up, and they have made up more (esp Ferrari).

Verstappen was ridiculous in the esses in 2023.

The RB20 still matched the 30,7s S1 from 2023, despite the unfavourable wind conditions.

A Red Bull which, through the first updates presented at the Japanese Grand Prix , re-shaping inlet (letterbox) and changes to the cooling system, has obtained a benefit relating to the development of the car. An RB20 now capable of showing off the required performance without worrying too much about operating temperatures.


Furthermore, there are various measures being examined regarding weight distribution which, obviously, must be as close as possible to the car's center of gravity (generally just behind the driver's shoulders). An aspect in which the RB20 proves to be very compact.

Over the years, I have felt that Red Bull lacks a strong propaganda department in comparison to Ferrari and Mercedes. This was the case even when they were behind.

Can't remember reading anyone saying they have outright less downforce now. They seem to have lost a bit in medium speed and traded it for a lot better low speed and kerb riding. High speed they are still the best, McLaren close 2nd, Ferrari close 3rd.

I find the way Paul Monaghan described the update to be interesting (I think this was posted before but wanted to discuss again). It sounds like we have yet to see updates which reflect areas for improvement that Red Bull discovered during testing and the first races. It's reasonable to assume that will come in Imola, along with the general conceptual progression of the car.

While teams are constantly battling aero compromises with additional cooling, Monaghan was clear that the extra inlet was not a response to any issues the team may have found in the early races.

Instead, he explained that the changes were part of an upgrade push that had been agreed before the RB20 had run in anger.

“It was actually done before we even turned a wheel in pre-season testing,” he said. “So, this was sitting there as a small performance gain. The question was, could we actually get it onto the car in the flyaway sequence?

“We looked at it and thought: ‘yeah, we can.’ We made some parts and got them to Australia, so some of it started there. And then we picked the rest of it up here.”

In other words… this is our “won last season half way through update” so now they are all on the same steps.

Interesting, I think this is in line with what Waché said at the beginning of the season:
“The goal is to find performance, and we’ll be aggressive in development. We’ll have an evolution in Japan, and another as we return to Europe to bring even more performance to the car or address any issues we encounter.”
which seems to suggest that a real performance gain will come by Imola (first european race). I think also they will "desperately" need that because, going by recent rumors, Ferrari are basically bringing a new car to Imola.

Always a man that talks a lot of sense. F2 cars are louder than F1 cars at the minute.

Wasnt it also Newey who said the 2026 engine regs would be a bit crap about 6-12month ago? And now look at the stories coming out.
