Fuels loads and engine modes definitely coming into play here. No way Mercedes are as quick as the top 3
regarding fuel loads, the time spent in the pits before the long run can usually give a bit of an indication. Today everything looks normal.

But additional to the different engine modes, we now also have cars with brand new engines facing some with units from Bahrain. So the differences can be quite large indeed.

Unless you are running a very heavily detuned engine, engine mode matters only relatively in a race sim, especially in imola. Most drivers are just sliding down Rivazza for example if you follow the onboards.

I know he removes the fuel factor etc, but not quite sure how he ended up with Piastri that far behind. The hard tire must have a massive advantage in his model.

Red Bull legitimately looks to be struggling. Ferrari looks really, really solid both in race sims and quali sim. The SF-24 looks like such a joy to drive compared the RB20 here, especially over the kerbs.
RB will improve massively as they (almost) always do.
Currently it's giving Singapore 2023. Red Bull seems a lot worse than they usually do when they have an overnight recovery, especially with how much Max is complaining on the radio. They've only gone backwards since FP1.

I don't think it's going to be full Singapore 2023, but I really struggle to see how they will recover if they --- up their quali. Ferrari looks really, really good in race sims and if Max qualifies like p5 I don't see a way for him to get past, since Ferrari actually tends to have better tyre wear than Red Bull this season, so going long and overcutting a la 2022 isn't an option.

Red Bull car balance looks all over the place. I've never seen Verstappen going off this much before, especially not in FP.
I feel that Norris win affected him more than we think. Ferrari is throwing salt in the wound now.
But let's see! He could get it together for P3 and qualy.
For Sure!!

With the Red Bull like this, Perez's annual struggles when the European season starts is going to be magnified

RedBull will be fine tomorrow. Engine turned down and they’ll solve their little balance problems.

Doesn't look like 'little' balance problems. Looks mega balance problem - couldn't get it right despite spending 2 hours on it. Doesn't bode well for the team. The time lost in two corners - 9 and 11-12 was 0.5s. Discounting PU mode, let's say that's 0.35s lost in two corners. Particularly 11 (aqua minerale), as its a downhill righthander, where the RB20 stays on road only if it's slowed down massively before entry - shows it's understeering like a pig. This doesn't look like one of those 'we did our homework overnight and fine-tuned our setup' problems, this looks more like 'oops, our update has made us go backwards' problem.

I will be glad to be proved wrong, a 3 team fight at the front is far more enjoyable than just 2. On current pace, looks like it's a juicy Ferrari v McLaren fight at the front and a dull RedBull v Mercedes fight for P5-P6.

"No way" seems a bit of a stretch. It might be unlikely, but for the first time in a while it does seem as though the Mercs have hit the ground running with their upgrades and setup. The car looked very stable right from the jump, and quick.
I also think mercedes (or others) can "surprise" here. Imola is a fairly abnormal track.

Now that newey is leaving he locked the car and hid the key lol
Seems he knows when a ceiling has been hit, and has got out. Era’s end, and rivals catch up. I’m just surprised it’s possibly come a year earlier than really expected.

Max now real under pressure. Either they end up delivering, and keep rivals at arms length, or Max gets exposed over the remaining season. Intriguing.

Makes all that ‘he won’t move in 25’ as he has a guaranteed title stuff not so concrete, if RB do get caught.

looks like Piastri was a mistake. In the F1.de Youtube show, he had an updated version of the chart:

What do you mean by that?
The cheapest sort of pride is national pride, every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.
