Yuki arrived at the Hungaroring with his trainer John Noonan this morning and talked to the press .

Tsunoda says “that would be weird” if they choose Lawson over him if Red Bull F1 axe Sergio Pérez

Yuki Tsunoda has been one of the most impressive drivers in the midfield teams this year as rumours swirl over the future of Sergio Pérez.

Clauses in the Mexican’s contract could mean he has two races to save his Red Bull career. After scoring just 15 points over the last 6 rounds, the 6-time race winner is under massive pressure to improve his form in Hungary and Spa, to help Max Verstappen and his team in both championships.

Tsunoda has outqualified teammate Daniel Ricciardo 9-3 in the Grand Prix sessions this year, and he leads his teammate 20-11 in points. Following tricky events in Spain and Austria, the Japanese returned to good form at Silverstone as he managed to take a point and beat faster cars to it.

Asked if the next two events are massive due to the increased pressure on Sergio Pérez, the 24-year-old admitted that is the case.

“If the rumors are true, yes.

“But to be honest, like I said, I don’t know the exact situation around. To be honest, it’s probably the same as you guys. Less information than you guys probably.

“In the end, every race is very important. Like myself, the contract is not really fixed for many years.

“In the end, the same things are as usual, to be honest.”

Nonetheless, Tsunoda does not feel any extra pressure heading into Hungary and Spa, believing not knowing whether he had a future in the sport after a very difficult start to his rookie season in 2021 was worse.

“Let’s see, I don’t feel so much pressure or anything.

“Those things will probably naturally come with different situations. But, I mean, there are a lot more worse pressures than probably now.

“Probably now, it’s good pressure rather than bad pressure, if you compare the last three years, not knowing what you’re going to do next year. That’s worse.

“I mean, in the end, like I said, I’m very focused on the current Visa Cash App team and see how it goes.”

Liam Lawson ran in the RB20 at Silverstone last Thursday as the New Zealander ran in a filming day for the team.

During his spell replacing the injured Daniel Ricciardo at RB last year, Lawson impressed many, bagging points in Singapore following a superb run to Q3 in qualifying.

He beat Tsunoda on merit in Japan in the Grand Prix itself. However, the Japanese driver did win the qualifying head-to-head 4-1, and he was unlucky in the races in the Netherlands (strategy), Italy (DNS due to unreliability), and Singapore (taken out by Pérez).

Tsunoda admits he would find it very strange if Lawson gets picked over him for the Red Bull drive should Pérez be removed, considering the performances he has put in himself.

“If they choose Liam, that would be weird.

“I mean, for sure, Liam did a really good job when he drove in the team, but I think I did more than that.

“And we’ll see how it goes. In the end, they know how to manage the drivers.”

It sounds like RB have finally fixed the issues with the car that have held the lads back since Barcelona.
Daniel Ricciardo #3
First Practice Session – Best lap: 1:19.578, pos. 12th, 27 laps
Second Practice Session – Best lap: 1:18.371, pos. 8th, 20 laps

“I’m very happy with where we ended today in terms of feeling of the car, balance, and obviously classification. I’m much happier now after FP2 compared to where we were this morning following FP1 as I felt we had a bit of work to do after that session. FP2 was solid and we’re in the fight; I was pretty happy and comfortable with the car with both low and high fuel. It’s just practice but it was one of those good Fridays. Tomorrow is a new day, we’ll make some fine tunes tonight and keep it rolling.”

Yuki Tsunoda #22
First Practice Session – Best lap: 1:19.260, pos. 8th, 26 laps
Second Practice Session – Best lap: 1:19.606, pos. 19th, 13 laps

“Generally, it was a good day for us as a team and started well in FP1. The disrupted FP2 on track and issues on my car meant our run plan slightly changed in the afternoon, and while everyone was doing their long run I struggled to have a clean lap. Overall, the team showed some strong performance, like in the first races, so the energy is positive.”

Alan Permane (Racing Director)

“It was a half-good day for our team. Unfortunately, Yuki’s car had a problem with the front suspension setup in FP2. We figured out what the problem was, but we couldn’t fix it in time, so he really didn’t have any sort of FP2 this afternoon. On the other side of the garage, Daniel was very happy with his car. It looks quick and competitive, and we know that’s where Yuki should and will be tomorrow. Overall, it’s been a slightly frustrating but mainly promising day.”

With 34 mins to go in FP3, both lads just finished their qually sim and are 4/10ths behind Norris (in p2/3), and in front of Oscar.

The lads are separated by 3/100ths of a second - very impressive, I hope it continues.

The car is looking much better this weekend, in Daniels final soft tire run in FP3 with 10 mins to go, he was only 1/2 a second off Lando’s epic lap, and in 5th ATM.

Yuki has waited a few more minutes to do his run I think.

Edit: Yuki waited till ~7 ish mins to go and was a 1/10th down on Daniel.

The car is looking very much improved this weekend, what a relief!

Edit 2: Laurent suggested on Sky that was their final new tire run, but they’ve both gone out again with 3 mins to go, I assume to test track evolution on old tires.

Edit 3: yep, old tire track evolution test.
Final FP3 positions are 6th for Daniel and 9th for Yuki. It’s looking like a good points weekend for RB.

If Ricciardo wants that RBR drive, he needs to show his speed like he did in P3 especially with Perez struggling.

Well what a crazy qualli. Perez botches it again. Surely they replace now after this with either Dan, Yuki or Liam. Dan pushing his case for that RBR seat with a fine qualli keeping it on track for 9th and beating Yuki . Yuki did well until the crash
Glad he is ok. Overall a great day for the team though!

Look at his head and neck shaking!! That must have hurt! Hope he is OK and they both were in Q3 so that is good!

Yuki probably got too comfortable and should have been more careful. Probably would have improved his time too. Issue is whether the car will be fit for the race and can hold positions, but probably not.

Daniel’s do or die lap in Q3 was epic, fastest of that session. It definitely shows he still has the speed, and in changeable conditions too!

A real shame for Yuki tho, until he ran wide in Q1, he was doing a very good job!

The most frustrating part is that he wrecked Daniel’s last set of new soft tires (Daniel was coming out of turn 2 when Yuki crashed) - Daniel (and Yuki) should have started ahead of the Aston’s.

Yep a mega lap and with no DRS too!

Dan said he was angry about the red flag in Q3 as he said they could have been even quicker but then was also relieved Yuki was ok. He thinks the car will be even better in the race.

That’s great to hear he thinks the car has good race pace, hopefully he can bag some nice points!

Yuki’s car looked very badly damaged, I wonder if he’ll need to start from pit lane?

Yep looking forward to the race! Car seems well suited to this track!

yeah no idea with Yuki's car unless they had to work extra time to get the car turned around or have to exceed his parts allocation. Given the car damage its quite possible he may have to.

That’s a shame, but I’m not surprised, it was a heavy crash. 😔

I was walking through Singapore pit-lane and the photo for AlphaTauri is from Lawson.
There are Yuki and Lawson; not Ricciardo!
Does anybody knows if he is confirmed for Singapore this year?
