George Russell: “I see no reason why we can’t be as far away from the front as we showed, if not a little bit closer but, there’s differences with power mode I think. Red Bull and Ferrari were in lowest power modes so they got a bit on us there. It’s tricky…”

And Toto Wolff also:

Mercedes at the front? Wolff is also skeptical
"We were also pretty strong in Miami on Friday and I think that if the grip level builds up, then maybe we'll return to our old weakness," says the Mercedes team boss, slowing down expectations at 'Sky' after P2 and P3.

The bouncing could return - as it did recently in Miami. "But solid for a Friday," he sums up, adding: "I think we might have had a bit more motor than Ferrari and Red Bull."

"But at least we're not as far away as we were before," said Wolff.

I forgot to add Perez race sim and I'll compare it to Sainz. I don't know what the fuel load was actually, if stint 1 or 2, but it looks like very good tyre degradation for Perez compared to Sainz. I hope Ferrari doesn't eat their tyres again...

Would MB have used the new PU in Friday practice as I thought traditionally a pool PU was used on a Friday with the race unit going in for Saturday.

I think based on the FIA documents they used the new PU today.

Russell was told strat 2 for his soft tyre run, so basically simulating q3, but only had around 316 kmh, ferrari had 327 kmh in fp1, but only around 317 in fp2. Rb had 324 i think in fp1 and 315 in fp2, so i'd say russells engine comments are not completely out of the blue. Im really curious if strat 2 programming will actually change for quali or not.

Max's medium pace was ridiculous especially considering the engine mode. For Ferrari's sake I hope they have a lot in hand

Strat 2 doesnt mean the same engine mode necessarily no? Im sure they have different codes for every session to keep the opposition guessing.
Seems people forgot that merc is introducing an upgraded pu here. Yes upgraded for “reliability” but you know what that means. My guess is that everyone ran normal engine modes and what is being said is purelytypical mind games by Merc. They have found gobs of lap time. We shall see in quali tomorrow though.

That quote from Toto about the PU (relative to the others) and the job the folks at Brixworth have done is so so telling. For a guy who rarely ever puffs his chest this early in a race weekend, he is absolutely peacocking. They've found time and pace, relative to where they were. Now we'll see where that puts them this weekend and those upcoming.

Looking at photos both Ferrari and Mercedes are at absolutely uber low ride heights, time to put up or shut up.

Why do sky insist on calling the Mercedes’ floor edge wing an “ice skate”?

The only car ive seen with the ice skate is the RB
Ferrari has a little baby one in a particlur photo.

Still think the race pace of the merc is going to be much slower than the RB/Ferrari
Mess with the Bull - you get the horns.
