Well, there are people who think that starting with softs (new, as Alonso has) is a good option in this circuit. Apparently, there's the possibility to easy gain positions.
What's to be seen is if you can keep that positions or otherwise the tyre dies in few laps and then you're compromised for the rest of the race.
If tire wear is significant, track position might not matter much if you only have it for a couple of laps before being forced to pit. It's risky because it puts you at a disadvantage in later stints. However, it is not so easy to overtake without significant performance delta here, so it might be worth the gamble.
