2012 Car Comparison Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

2012 Cars
I have made some measurements based on the front rim diameter and the article from f1 regulation manual (12.4.4 Wheel bead diameter must lie between 328 and 332mm).
I have taken 330mm as default rim diameter to all cars.

There is a better scale length that I used last year. The regs specify a fixed dimension from front of the front wing to the front axle. It is roughly 1000, so that would give more accurate scaling. You need to use the leading edge of the nearside endplate to the centre of the wheel as they are roughly in the same plane.

Caterham is the longest on the grid.

Are they trying to put an additional KERS unit in there or what??

The Ferrari seems to be the shortest on the 2012 grid and Mercedes AMG to have the lowest sidepods.

Great job. This year is definitely the year for Red Bull style 'draped' sidepods. The only other interesting style I'm seeing which may be as effected are the W03 sidepods which are of course lower, yet longer and not so much draping over the structure in a general way which I would think would impede flow attachment. W03 has more of a straight shot back to the end yet very low.

For all intents and purposes, the cars appear to all have pretty much the same wheelbase length; the differences are negligible in every sense. I don't know why, but that surprises me.

EDIT: Maybe it shouldn't be surprising given that weight distribution is again fixed this year.

Sorry to say that, but those calculated wheelbases are not even close to reality, much much too short in my opinion.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Nope. They're just about right. Close enough, anyway.

As I've previously noted, it is better to use the longer scale of 1000 from front of front wing end plate to front axle
