Maybe shocking is the wrong word, but it's definitely surprising. We all know how regular smoking can affect your fitness and your health, and for someone like an F1 driver who is meant to be at peak fitness (and sometimes paid millions for it), you'd expect them to take their health pretty seriously!

Hi, ex-smoker here. Been doing it for the last 16 years, I can certainly tell it affects your fitness. The moment I started doing it my lungs told me - No way, cowboy.

Some people, however, feel comfortable smoking, as it brings the necessary serenity of the mind and hence the body. I can't really see why is that a shocking news, and is this site a reliable source? That's a free educated choice.

All that's left now is to draw the line between cigar smoking and shues poor performance on track.

sum professional footballers (soccer) players smoke. And i bet other professional sportsman/women do too.

The thing is they work on there fitness heavily most days and have personal trainers who monitor there fitness.. I'm pretty sure if it effected them that much they'd quit. If there fitness level is at an acceptable level for whats expected then why not.

even smoking i bet there fitter than some people who exercise 3 days a week and don't smoke

We are sitting here and we can't pick out the smokers from non smokers unless we have a picture of them doing it, so its not effecting them too much so it doesn't matter and doesn't surprise me

Well, we actually might be able to. Remember Kimi having problems with the steering at the beginning of the season? You don't hear most of the drivers complain about that, not even among the new ones. It could indicate a slightly worse then F1-average fitness, possibly caused by smoking. That might be a bit far fetched, but it could be linked.

Now to think of it: Trulli had the same problem in 2011. Did he smoke?

i think that was purely feel. It it was fitness he would just of required the lightest it could be.

i'm not denying Kimi is prob one of the least fit drivers though - he clearly likes a party and a drink. But even so, he still can do the job as we've seen this year

Webber looks like a smoker the most out of all drivers. I'd say it's him.
"There is a credit card with the Ferrari logo, issued by Santander, which gives the scuderia a % of purchases made with the card...

I would guess that such a serious amount of money would allow them to ignore the constant complains of a car that was nowhere near as bad as their #1 driver tried to sell throughout the season.

Heck, a car on which Massa finishes in the podium or has to lift so that his teammate finishes ahead (As we saw often in the final races of the year) is, by no means, a "bad" car."

Lurk wrote:Of course there is not safe tobacco use. Point was: "cigar is not as bad as cigarette"

It takes us back to Point 4:
Unlike nearly all cigarette smokers, most cigar smokers do not inhale. Although cigar smokers have lower rates of lung cancer, coronary heart disease, and lung disease than cigarette smokers, they have higher rates of these diseases than those who do not smoke cigars.

Smoking cigars is bad for your health, smoking cigarettes is even worse.
Are you crazy?
There is way more bad stuff in cigars..all the way from nicotine and tars to the chemicals used in curing the tobacco for cigars.
Also almost no smoler "Puffs" on a cigar,,you do wind up inhaling.
Cigars are many times worse than cigarettes.
However the bottom line is...Who cares?
It's between the driver and the team...it's not like it's illegal.
