yeah thanks but im looking more like how many started the race.. for that race onli 26 qualified. coz they wont go back to the 107% coz anything can happen in 1 run qualifyin..imagine alonso/kimi makes a mistake in quali and has to miss the race!!
There was no 107% rule back than, it was introduced in 1996 and abandoned after 2002.
Most cars definitely started in 1989 having in mind overall number of teams, just check out all the races of 1989 season on that link I posted.
The number of cars for the race start was limited to 26 (only top 26 cars from the qualifying entered the race).
There is also universal formula for determining capacity of the circuit- max number of cars. Can’t remember it now but it is applied on all sorts of circuit racing when the number of competitors that come to an event (before the qualifying) exceeds capacity for the circuit in question.
For example capacity of Spa is grated than capacity of Monaco which means that more cars could run at Spa if their number isn’t limited. Capacity of the track depends not only on length but also on configuration, width, quality of tarmac, safety and visibility. It is defined by FIA commissions that license tracks before the championship.
In high-class racing number of available garages is the key factor especially if the specific series demand refueling and tyre changes. That is why nowadays FIA limits number of teams.
