Ever wondered how big the 917 was (or rather how small should I say)? Now you know:

Thats the only one I know of, it was one of Martini's race cars converted to over to steet use for Count Rossi of Martini & Rossi fame. It must be nice to have an extra 917 laying around :D

When ever someone ask's me why I became a hugh motorsports fan I always point to the white 917 longtail #25 in the movie Le Mans.
It's the 1st movie I ever saw in a movie theater and when I saw that white rocketship sail by the funny looking blue cars at the start of the race, that was it I was hooked
Porsche fan for life and still to this day I perfer sportscar/endurance racing over F1

The gulf coloured 917 is what I think of when I hear the name. Not the CAN-AM stuff. But fantastic pictures! There is a video on youtube somewhere that has a team starting one up for the first time in like, 20 years. All they do is pour some fluid into the webbers, change the fuel pump, and away she goes! Incredible stuff.

The picture with the white 917 is chassis 917-021, but it was not the only one driven on the street. The Rossi 917 was the 917-030 and still remains with the family in alabama, albeit painted black now rather than the original silver. Herbert von Karajan also owned a 917 but there is no 100% evidence of a registration of it, but some say these were the 3 street legal 917. Funnily though, in fact Jürgen Barth stated there were a lot more street registered 917 from Porsche itself, they just never got a license plate.

The glorious Salzburg car that won Le Mans 1970, with Hermann and Dickie Attwood, legendary reaching 400 kmh on Mulsanne.

Yeah, & famously scoring a 1st outright win for Porsche, & doing that in a lowly 4.5 ltr unit,
- after all the quicker, more powerful machines had fallen by the wayside..

How/why do so many current sports cars manage to look so ugly - by comparison that classic honey..
