Some interesting insights into what challenges the designers faced for W08, the diva.

Autosport Premium:
Link -> Why Mercedes was so confused by its diva

Mercedes chief designer talks about having designed a 90% car for 2017 and not a 100% car. He further elaborates, the car wasn't 100% optimized on all grounds and they had let a lot of space on the car to handle unknown challenges of new regulations. They also had a late change on the PU side, which they could accommodate on W08 as that philosophy helped. Had that happened on W07, they had to completely tear down the design to accommodate it.

They built a lot of adjustment into the car, the capability to react to things that they would see. He says, unfortunately most of the things they had to adapt to, they hadn't seen coming.

Now that they understand the challenges of new regulations and the problem areas of the W08, he says, they can be aggressive with next year's car.
Expect everything to be tighter and more interpinked and expect a wider variety of
specialized aerodynamic packages. It is gonna be a nice year!

I think their idea of "all new" and ours might be different. This won't be a clean sheet of paper design but a development from last year's unit that incorporates lots of little changes, all of which mean the unit is "new" compared to last year's.

Interesting that he talks about there being lots of 5 millisecond gains to be found. 5 milliseconds!

I saw someone on reddit who is friends with a guy that works for Merc HPP. Apparently they had two engines to choose from, one bullet proof engine that would last all year and be a bit better than the 2017 model, or one with more performance that might not last as long.

Literally anyone could say that as it's quite often a factor in motorsport engineering design.

Wind tunnel upgrade,
I was wondering if it was a secondary tunnel, because upgrading the tunnel right now seems like horrible idea.

Not if they've finished all their data for 2018 season and are going to place this windtunnel with 2019 in mind, and using the new tunnel/upgrade for 2018 updates.

That assumes they have good correlation from day one. It usually takes teems a few months to get everything ironed out. I would not want to go into a season not knowing if i can trust my tunnel.

A few months still leaves them 9 out of 12 extra months to get miles ahead of the 2019 curve.
They would share the original tunnel between years 2018/19 before that anyway.
