Between 1979 and 1986 Marc Surer drove 82 Formula 1 races for the Ensign, ATS, Arrows and Brabham teams. Those teams were technically inferior most of the times and one would not expect their drivers to win much races and podiums. He drove races in the time when people really risked their life and each year people died in horrible accidents. Most of those cars had no carbon fibre safety cell at that time and fuel cells with elaborate safety mechanisms were unknown. His F1 career highs were two P4 positions and one fastest lap. With the fastest lap he actually did one better than Martin Brundle who never achieved that. 1985 he won two endurance sports car races (24h Spa and 1000 km Monza)
There is no doubt that Surer is a very brave and gallant man from the times when racing drivers were real heroes. He may not have had the talent of a Gilles Villeneuve but he is a real racer by heart.
Surer was a kart champion and F2 Euro champ before he drove F1 and continued his career with rally and tin top racing. He had a fatal rally accident which claimed the life of his co driver and put him in hospital with severe burns stopping his driver career eventually. He kept in touch with racing as sporting director of BMW in the nineties for DTM and STW.

I have listened to Marc Surer's commentary on German Sky for several years and experienced him as a throughly informed and deeply involved expert who's opinion in sporting and technical issues is usually spot on. It is very seldom that he has to retract a statement or opinion after a race. I cannot understand how someone can make denigrating comments about such a man. I can only assume it stems from being uninformed or even ignorant.
