I really think it'll be Wehrlein. They've been angling to get him in for a while, need to show faith in their young driver program, and it'll likely save them a lot of hassles as I think Lewis will have a consistent edge. If Mercedes still have a sizeable performance advantage, it'll be easy to put all their eggs in the one basket.

I hope I'm wrong - the Alonso idea is the most interesting to me (and Wolf has spoken of him being an option to replace their drivers in the past) - but I think it's much easier all round for Mercedes to go with their home grown guy.

Mercedes has never suffered from inexplicable loss of rear grip between FP3 and Qualifying. Button could test that for them.

God I would love to see Grojean join the team. It wouldn't be a bad choice either because he's quick, probably quicker than Nico was, and very smart and pretty experienced, too. And holy --- would he give Hamilton fits.

Looking at the development of 2017 cars ; how fast Merc has to decide on replacement driver?

Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."

LOL, he was slower than RAI, how can he be faster than ROS (who is just 0.1xx off HAM)
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Didn't Hamilton get sick and they put Wehrlein in to drive recently?

Wehrlein is the obvious choice, though other options like Vettel or Alonso would make me happy.

But from Mercedes point of view Pascal seems like the easiest option to manage. He would be the unofficial second driver.

It´s common sense. Yes, Alonso and Hamilton would push like crazy people, the spectacle for us would be fenomenal but for Mercedes it would be a nightmare to manage.

Yikes, I shudder at the thought of Hamilton with a dedicated number two driver.

Button posted this photo yesterday. But where was it taken? Perhaps at Mercedes?
