The Sauber F1 Team is pleased to announce that Pascal Wehrlein will complete the team’s driver line-up for the 2017 Formula One World Championship. He will race alongside Swede Marcus Ericsson who continues with the Swiss team.

LOL, he was slower than RAI, how can he be faster than ROS (who is just 0.1xx off HAM)
Did we watch the same 2013?
sure, and RAI was better.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

They've been angling to get him in for a while, need to show faith in their young driver program, and it'll likely save them a lot of hassles as I think Lewis will have a consistent edge. If Mercedes still have a sizeable performance advantage, it'll be easy to put all their eggs in the one basket.
I hope I'm wrong - the Alonso idea is the most interesting to me (and Wolf has spoken of him being an option to replace their drivers in the past) - but I think it's much easier all round for Mercedes to go with their home grown guy.
Conservative Germans being conservative.
It´s common sense. Yes, Alonso and Hamilton would push like crazy people, the spectacle for us would be fenomenal but for Mercedes it would be a nightmare to manage.
Yeah I'm not disagreeing mate. I agree, I just can't see anyone other than Wehrlein in that Merc at the moment. Any other would (maybe) too risky, but then there are a lot of big names who (as we speak) contact Merc for that open seat. We all know the likes of Fernando, Kimi or Seb can drive and there's still alot of time till testing. Knowing how management of Merc is, don't like any risks, I'd say they are fairly conservative.
Mercedes need a driver who can push Hamilton, I think their competition pushed them to get the most out of the car. A second driver won't do that and they know that 2017 will be tougher, I expect Mercedes will go for a proven driver.
Top picks: Vettel, Alonso, Sainz, Perez. Vettel would be my top pick! Alonso and Hamilton would be destructive, for the team but fun the watch.
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."
Mercedes is now faced with the task of finding replacement. The most logical choice would be Pascal Wehrlein. But it does not seem quite so logical. For who wants to beat the Superteams Ricciardo / Verstappen with Red Bull and Vettel / Räikkönen with Ferrari, actually needs two GP winners in the team.
According to Mercedes-Teamchef Toto Wolff, one wants to deal with the topic of Rosberg succession starting next Monday: "For the team, it is a somewhat unexpected, but also an exciting situation. We are faced with the challenge that the new technical regulations are ahead of us and we have a free Mercedes cockpit before the season. We will now take the necessary time and examine all the variants and then take the right path for the future. "

Based on what I've seen him do in the Haas...he's more formidable than people think.
Top teams and McLaren will probably not allow a contract buyout, so Button, Alonso or Vettel look to be out of the question (unless clausules come into play). Wehrlein would be free, but Mercedes might feel he is not ready yet.
The most solid and most realistic option I think would be Sergio Perez. Force India does allow that if sufficient compensation is given.
It's a car that looks almost comically basic compared to the ultra contoured lines of today. The front wing looks so basic, no wonder he had problems bringing the tires up to temperature. Anyway I thought they gave him that car for winning the championship.
