McLaren MCL36 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Similar thing I guess, no point making too many spares or spare chassis if you're expecting to make new ones in a couple races.

edit: I'll just leave this quote here too "We've made so many rear brake ducts to test I can't remember which version is which any more"
Interesting! Suggests that there a ‘decent’ performance gains simply from that part.

Which is why I think most of the cars turning out on day one will be baseline models to establish what they already have. Not hiding things, just not having anything advanced on them until they establish where they are now.

Have you guys noticed how ridiculously small the sidepods of the HAAS are? But in strike contrast, the car itself is a little fat lol. On the MCL36 at least I've noticed that we have a much larger sidepod, however the car is narrower. Just thought it was interesting.

How do you know the MCL36 sidepod is larger? I don’t think we have had any actual information on them yet.

The Haas is actually very slim, they’ve followed Mercedes philosophy of maximizing the space at the front of the sidepods in order to have a very slim footprint in the rear of the car.

I was referring to the sidepod inlets. The VF-22's inlets are small but the bodywork extends out like crazy. The same can't be said about the MCL36 I think as we've seen multiple images of the car that essentially confirms this.

The MCL36 cooling layout looks similar to the Merc layout, which is a very common one nowadays (with relatively narrow but long coolers that are partly inserted inside the monocoque flancs (yellow on the Merc/gold on the MCL)
(*Merc factory team has no intercoolers in the sidepods, unlike Mclaren, so I'm just talking about the general layout inside the sidepods)
But it seems Haas has opted for a very different layout in 2022...

Could you please share those pics? I don’t think I’ve seeing any bodywork pics of the MCL36.

I believe that bulky sidepods at the front will be a trend this year, trying to be as slim as possible in the back

McLaren may have Haas-like sidepods too. Maybe not that wide, but general concept should be similar

Yes I think you are spot on, Haas appear to have gone for what you predicted in the 3rd image, with the radiator positioned between the impact structures and as far forward as possible. Potentially that's what we are seeing on the McLaren as well, it will be interesting to see if they manage to package things a bit tighter in terms of the overall width.

If the cooler in the sidepod starts so far ahead, then it should be at least not as wide as under the last regulation. Because the cooler should be longer and the monocoque is narrower at the front. The Haas sidepod look very big.

We really don't know what to make of the Haas photos. Their entire car could be 100% different. Those pics mean nothing.

I wouldn't go that far. Steiner mentioned the final version being "a little bit different" which suggests that the details will continue development but the basics are there.
