Phew thanks for the less creepy panda. I can sleep now.

So a panda walks into a bar and sits down at a table, orders a beer, and lays a 45 magnum on the table. When the panda finishes his drink, he fires a few shots in the air and runs out the door.

The bartender says "What the hell was that" and the waitress responds "Oh that was just a panda, he eats chutes and leaves".

Aherm.

It would be interesting to see who ignores the most people :)

-1 for the 'ignore' button.

I think it's rude and disrespectful to others. You never know when even the most despised person might make an insightful and interesting comment. I recall witnessing multiple of those occurrences.

Indeed mx, I'm not willing to go into that request. If you're not interested in a particular post, just skip it ;)

Related to this, I would like to ask for a bit more action on the "report this post" button. Often we get complaints through PM's, but it's far easier for us to handle the reports. When there's an issue, just report it and we'll deal with it. If done well we're not going to need an ignore button ;)

Thanks tomba.

Ps perhaps I should have been more explicit than a little smiley that was meant to indicate "you've got to be joking? what next? League tables?"

New year's resolution for 2009 is to speak with clarity and avoid wry smilies and obtuse nudges. Should be able to manage that for 21 days. Not sure about 2010!

I had posted this in another thread, when the idea came to me. That thread is since closed, but this is an idea:

-snip-

If the active topics on the front page were not updated every time they were changed, but on an hourly or some other basis, then people might be less inclined to jump into a thread that they were not part of already just to argue.

Or if the messages on the front page were arranged by category, then technical threads that might not have a lot of chatter and pith very quickly put the active technical topics that seem to go to go on longer but with more intellect, would remain on the front page longer, enticing more users into these threads. This would give the most active topics in categories other than general equal eyeball time, and if anything the front page posts should be skewed towards the technical, at the expense of the non.

I agree. This arrangement would allow a rapid turnover of off-topic and general chat threads without drowning out the slower burning technical threads.

I also would like to know who has created a thread at a glance. It is usually quite informative as to the quality of the thread. If there isn't any room on the front page for any more information then may be we could have a 'mouse over' text box that gives more information such as Full Thread Title, Thread Creator, Number of Pages, Thread Created Date.... little pie chart showing how many posts each respondent has contributed (well it would look nice).

Is 'Alonso technical level' a technical thread?
It even has the word 'technical' in it's title. #-o

I am not saying the Alonso chatter was anything near technical, please don't put words in my mouth.

The Alonso ying yang is the exact kind of thread that should get less attention on a site like this, as opposed to the discussion on rigs.

It is already shown, along with the person who posted the most recent post. That only tells you about 2 people, there could be another handful of posts between first and last that could be gems... or terrible.

Did I put words in your mouth? My point was that there's a thin line to be crossed to make a technical thread into an arguing match between say Taliban and Bavarian Conceptualists. Who's going to read all that stuff to define and sort the technical threads from non-technical ones?
Besides General F1 Chat is all about general chat on f1. A valuable thread doesn't have to be strictly technical.

I will +1 the ignore button. We have it on a few other forums it really helps with trolls they eventually get bored of no one replying to them and leave. Since f1tech does not ban it would be an effective way for members to do it for them.

Sorry, I meant on the home page (it was me who posted the idea, for what its worth). Just a little popup box when you pass your cursor over a thread link, showing the full thread title (sometimes too long to see on the home page summary), number of pages in thread, who created it etc.

Also I support the idea of the 'Active Threads' page being divided by category so we have the 10 most active threads from each category shown. Next page would show the next 10 most active threads from each category and so on.

Oh the home page. I never go there ... oops. I always go straight to the "new posts page"
