Mercedes have screwed us over (within their rights as per the rules, but still). This shoulden't be allowed at the pinnacle of motorsport, if we are really seeking good competition and a good show. This makes all the rule overhauls we have had in the past years useless.

We do have a good car I think, but the current gap is shocking.

As for the new engine formula, I can't add anyting more to what others have already said; artificial, mario cart....

The problem here is that we need to unlearn everything we learned about the PU in preseason and start from sracth....

If we had a car that runs the same apex speeds as Mercedes but then loses out on traction out of corners or by being too slow in harvesting then I would agree that Mercedes screwed us over.

But it looks like the current spec car is not that fast regardless of the engine. The car may be closer when they start to optimize the deployment and recharging strategies, but it will still be slower. Let's hope that they have good development direction and that the upgrades are McLaren level great.

If not, I at least hope the guys to do their best and close the gap slightly to be able to challenge for podiums. We could end up in a year where our main rival is Red Bull for P3. Just like 2025.

It is the cooling. The chassis is not refined, the aero is not as efficient as on the works Merc. That was clear, just like in 2014 and any subsequent change on the cooling layout. Funny people denied it here...

New spec PU. Maybe some cooling requirements changed.

There’s a lot of talk about the Mercedes engines and whether it's mandatory for McLaren, Williams, and Alpine to run the exact same engine as the factory team. People keep asking why Mercedes is considered so far ahead when McLaren has the same engines—something Russell even mentioned this weekend.

Let me explain it simply: it’s like being an engineer working on a new Samsung phone, developing both the hardware and the software. You’re involved from day zero—the testing, the features, the shortcuts, the performance tuning, everything. Naturally, at launch, I can buy the exact same phone with the exact same specs, but will I know how to use it as well as you do? No. I have to learn.

Can I know every trick and feature that you already mastered? No. I’m still learning. Can I squeeze out the same performance as quickly as you can? Not yet. But I’m getting there.

It’s the exact same thing with McLaren. It’s only natural for Mercedes to know everything—or nearly everything—about the engine they developed themselves. But McLaren is learning too. And the faster they learn, the quicker they’ll close that 1.0 to 1.5-second gap we saw in Australia.

I’m certain that after the summer break, we’ll see a different McLaren. Does this mean the title is lost for this year? Possibly. But starting next year, things will definitely get interesting. McLaren has the people and the expertise to quickly understand exactly what needs to be done. Let’s keep pushing!

Its exactly that, plus that MB had this engine in tests also were MCLaren had it the last moment in Australia so they need to catch up a lot on this. Fortunately they have the data from MBs now to analyse and get there i hope soon.
I am not 100% confident that this is the only issue.

Afaik, engine manufacturers are required to provide the same engine spec, hardware, software and configuration tools, to their customer teams. Whether this was done in line with F1 rules shall be someone else's problems - I have to believe in that this was the case as the FIA would surely have said something.

(Side Note: It is also clear that the customer teams have the option not to take it either.
(to be understood as their prerogative to decline e.g. a newer fuel pump because it would hand them a penalty (see RB Renault fuel pump problems in 2016-ish).

Secondly, as to when the PU shall deploy/harvest the energy and how fast(!) at that is surely determined by the teams as well. And the amount of harvest/deploy/timeframe at a given location on track, is another variable.
And this is again dependent on the overall aerodynamic efficiency of its chassis ...

Based on the only race so far ;-) , I believe all of us saw that the Merc had some troubles early on fending off Leclerc's attack on the main straight before turn 11.
This was surely due to a different deployment strategy Mercedes implemented.

According to SkySportF1, McLaren’s Andrea Stella has revealed his discontent at a lack of engine "information" being provided by Mercedes 👀

And McLaren is not the only one having same issue, for now:

I mean, I think most of us saw this coming to an extent. Toto openly joked that supplying Mercedes engines to McLaren may not have been the "most intelligent choice". We know how shrewd he can be, so there was some thinly veiled truth behind it. He would have jumped at the chance to handicap his customers leading into these new regulations in order to give them a free run to the championship. I'm willing to bet HPP could very well have supplied the other teams with the latest spec during testing.

Hopefully McLaren can learn quickly, and I'm sure they will. A very interesting comment from Andrea was when they maximised the power output to defind from Max at the end, the car handled better in corners. That is critical information, and one that could transform their pace through setup work.

Good example to show that in this harvesting formula you can have lower apex speed and lower top speed (Mercedes compared to Ferrari) and yet be faster.

Going to wreck havoc on our ability to analyze data.
Bingo.
I have given up trying to analyze lap trace comparisons. It's meaningless, when we can't distinguish between aero-grip or mechanical grip from deployment thrust ; and can't distinguish braking efficiency from recharge load.
Yeah. Totally put off by this formula. It is to near impossible to understand what a car is doing through the corners and why.

MGU-H would have been a better option, but it's not the tech they want in road cars, so we're stuck with regs, shoehorning in road car technology into a place it doesn't belong.

Unfortunately you are right. I noticed that the rear outlet is easily the smallest of all the Merc PU powered teams.

McLaren will just have to find a way to do a better job than Mercedes.

Yep, even if Mclaren miraculously get their deployment to Mercs level for China, Mclaren will still be off the pace, I’d estimate something in the realm of pre Miami update in 2024.
Stella said that Mclaren are only nearly as good as Merc in one corner type and Lando gives the impression that Ferrari are better in all corner types.

This could be another remarkable turn a round of a season with supreme development or like you say, a Ferrari 2025 type season.

I have a personal theory that P4 in the standing is the optimal place to be for development. Close enough to get back to the front once the extra development allocation is used.

Interesting opinion on this engine topic, from our forum colleague VanjaH:

Deployment Power Limit needs to be introduced ASAP!
Reducing Deployment Power from 350kW to 250kW would immediately:
1) reduce battery drain -> reduce harvesting -> increase time at full speed on straights -> reduce dangerous speed differences between cars
2) reduce battery strain -> decrease cooling needs -> small performance improvement
3) reduce driver strain -> increase driver focus -> improve driver performance and racing

And according to an Italian source: What was anticipated on 23th of Feb will come to pass: after the next Chinese GP, the FIA, LM, and teams will sit down at the table to analyze what to salvage and what not from the first two race weekends; this analysis, combined with the tests already conducted in Bahrain, will lead to possible decisions for the good of F1. Even though publicly it seems like everything is going fine, there is enormous pressure behind the scenes on all the players involved #AutoRacer #F1
