Ross's team found a "clever thing" - not just the double diffuser as that was found by others too, but a proper outwash front wing. It took others a while to figure it out. When they did, and fitted it to their cars with appropriate other bits, the general deficiencies in the Brawn showed through.

With all respect to Brawn and his team (i.e. for putting Mercedes engine in their chassis in 6-7 weeks), but they inherited really good car developed by Honda.

However, and here big five for Brown and Co., they made excellent use of the tool they had, during 1st half of the season; before those with way bigger budgets came back. Good strategy, aggressive driving, very good reliability... their operations were top notch.

Ferrari have made successful updates and at least kept their development steps as big as Mercedes' for the majority of the season. How can it even be possible that they failed badly with all the updates from Singapore onwoards and even their further updates they brought to Austin don't seem to work? If their simulation data have been very reliable so that kinda everything correlated with track data throughout season, how comes this time nothing worked?

It's weird that they will use the old spec yet again for the remainder of the weekend. How big is the possibility that they're trying out something for next season already?

It's certainly possible that they've shifted their main emphasis to next season. Winning either championship is very difficult now so it would seem to be a sensible decision.

In terms of updates, it's possible that they had a very minor issue in an early update and, as they built on it, that deviation has grown and grown. If it was a part that was a fundamental foundation to the eventual upgrade route they followed then that innaccuracy could invalidate a lot/all of it. It's also possible that they weren't sure which piece had the error and have decided to strip right back and then re-add parts bit by bit to help identify where the issue lies. Personally, I think it's an excellent call. It's exactly the sort of brave, responsible move that needed to be made and speaks well of the current culture. Hold your hand up, admit the mistake, focus on finding and fixing it. With any luck, they'll be able to salvage quite a lot of the recent upgrade programme. Perhaps to late for this year but it may well be applicable to next year.

I really like this setup direction they've adopted this year. Even if they're not on pole, being faster on the straights gives you a lot of breathing space with the strategy. Easy to overtake, hard to be overtaken.
