Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Ferrari is also experimenting with new cylinder and piston coatings, so Honda is not alone, but it seems Honda developed their own thing IE the Honda way.

I hope now, with the previous discussions on cylinder and ring finish, and ring thickness, and piston coatings makes sense with regards to how Honda has been developing their engine over the last year. Why I believe that Honda will take a very nice step forward for the coming season.

What is interesting for me is the "Honda way" and the fact they are introducing a unique liner material, not used by any other high performance engine (as far as we know)
Source? I thought this was just speculation :P
It is not speculation, Honda has stated publicly that they developed a new plating material for pistons and cylinder bores with Koumabou metal corp.

PS, now that's a gorgeous cylinder hone, I wish there were high res pictures.
Those pictures are of the 2008 RA808E.

Yes, I know, Honda isn't going to show you the current F1 engine for obvious reasons.

I'm just pointing it out for others who don't know or realize, since you kind of made it seem that those images were Kumabou plating , which it obviously isn't. The plating indicated by the arrows in those pictures are likely of nickel, cobalt, or titanium, materials that are no longer allowed for those parts.

My bet was on Honda using solid lubricant ceramic dispersions as the liner coating.. But.. Just have to wait another ten or so years before someone publishes the insides of the engine.

If I was Williams, I'd be on the phone to Horner ASAP. Securing an Alpha Tauri - like deal for 2022-> would Kickstart their whole "reset".

How much real engineering work is going to be done in-house at Red Bull?

And how much of this is simply a marketing exercise with Honda still doing all the work behind the scenes?

Thank God Mateschitz is committed to sinking a fortune into motor racing.

F1 would be pretty boring right now with only Mercedes and Ferrari as its only key players.

Actually, it's pretty boring even with Red Bull!

IIRC, RBR did a lot of in-house work on the Renault V8s. I believe Cyril said so in an interview years ago.

I think they did a lot in sense for ICE (blow) mapping together with Viry and electronics for KERS in RB-tech inhouse.

Did they get Cowell? If so, possibly they will have the best PU in 2022-2024.

Even if they can get Cowell he would most likely not be allowed to start at RBR before the engine freeze.

Secondly I think he's made it quite clear he is no longer interested in F1.

And finally just employing him does not guarantee you'll have the best engine just like employing Newey does not guarantee you're getting the best car.

Poaching Merc people will be a blow, they were already leaving Brixworth in droves. There must be many current and ex-Merc engineers mashing the refresh button on the RBR careers as we speak.
