Renault F1 R.S. 20

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looks like they adopted a Mercedes-like VLIM mechanism.

The 2015 Enstone car did something similar but more rudimentary. The charge-air duct passed through the tub via a hole

Nice drawings of the monocoque, but it forgets to mention what the function is of the air duct below the roll hoop. :D

I believe that the top intake is used for combustion and is used to cool hydraulics. The bottom intake is used to cool the ERS.

(I suspect that the combustion intake and ERS cooling will be swapped next year, similar to most cars on the grid)

The Renault centerline cooling system isn't similar to any other 'CCS' because it lies on top of the engine directly behind the driver, while the other CCSs stand further back, behind the engine/above the turbo area...
And only Renault and Mclaren have a lower big intake in their roll-hoop,

And only Mclaren uses the lower one for the combustion air and the upper one for cooling. (While Renault is the other way around).
Do you mean Renault will adopt another CCS layout and do like Mclaren?

Toro-Rosso used to have a huge cooler behind the driver's head too. A giant V shaped cooler.

Yes. 2014.
A cool design IMHO : p

Then they've split it in 2015-2019

Hey guys, so, I'm just wondering with the season halfway through, what do you guys think Renault have used their tokens on for 2021? Are there any gapingly clear performance losses on the car?

The car is basically an RS.19B with an almost identical 2019 chassis + internals and reshaped sidopds and nose. So yes there is plenty of room for improvement on the paper... but with the very limited tokens, they can't (and dont wanna) build a new car.
That's why the car has no transition between the new thin nose and the old large tub

That's a clear performance loss :P

But the team might change the rollhoop design and/or the cooling system inside

Yes but apparently they were stating that the nose slapped on to the 2019 chassis wasn't a performance loss (lets remember the generation of stepped noses in f1) but if they were to change that, would that require changing the whole of the "Survival Cell /forward of B-B" which is worth 2 tokens?

Source?
And if there is no performance loss, why did RB and MCL make those heavy changes to the front of their tub? :P

Yes, so I couldn't rememeber where I found it, however after looking through again, I realise it was from someone else on the thread on the end of page 3 (his username: PowerandtheGlory), and unfortunately did not state his sources for this information. My bad.

Not bad for a 2018 chassis design.
