McLaren MP4-28 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I think they're gone backwards with side pod design. The MP4/28's are enormous!

They said they had a big update for test 2 so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they change. They've done it the past 2 years.

I think they're not bigger than the 27. And they should be shorter.

Hard to see in these photos. But i think he means when you look at the top view ones. It looks like the sidepods are bigger. But they are just a bit wider on the top. Though narrower on the bottom. I guess its to aid the coanda effect that the rear part of the sidepod is somewhat wider.

I guess this area is what he believes are enormous.

I think it is to get better coanda effect. To get more downwash in the exhaust area.

Perhaps more undercut which means the widest part has to be a little bit longer to fit everything,

OK but the difference between the angles adds a lot to the contrast between the two shapes.

yea it does, but here´s a better image i think. Look after the exhaust exit.

Looks like more sidepod bodywork on the new car.
I guess you can say the undercut goes on for longer then it did on the old car.

You should be comparing the MK2 MP4-27 sidepods not the launch ones.

To me the front rims look like they have those banned Ferrari fairings for cooling from 2010.

I made a list of changes from the side view, it looks the driver is a bit backwards, but it could be the angle of the pictures, I also impossed the MP4-27B (as I called the car that raced the last part of the season)
