Cars need to pass crash tests before pre season testing. This was introduced a few years ago I think.

Other than that, I don't think it has to be rules compliant otherwise it would be impossible to run most of the aero sensors on the car due to the bodywork rules.

They need to pass a crash test before testing begins because usually the cars are new. But the old ones are already homologated by the FIA.
And yes, in testing you can put pretty much anything on a car.

Has RedBull confirmed they will be at Jerez?? I wouldnt be surprised if they didnt show up with the RB10 at Jerez.

i guess all teams are confirmed unless otherwise stated. Although if red bull don't show up i'd question if its more to do with the Renault engine?

I was just speculating a bit. Boullier says he know as a fact there will be one more team missing out on the test. They share engine supplier with RedBull and STR. So my guess is that he has heard through Renault if some team is missing Jerez. Perhaps RedBull dosnt want to show their car untill later. They use same engine as Toro Rosso so if Toro Rosso is driving alot of milage at Jerez RedBull would learn alot about the engine and missing that test wouldnt be so significant.

I agree that that's prob going to be the case but i have to disagree with you (in bold). i see no gain for missing the first test on purpose. They need to learn about the engine in there own car and theres no guarantee torro rosso won't have problems and so get barely any mileage. and don't forget, for renault as an engine supplier they want as many teams running as possible, as more mileage in different cars the better for them and so the better for all renault users.

Red Bull would be playing something a bit like russian roulette if they did that - for themselves and renault. as renault class them as there works team they should really step up

Again its just speculation. Not saying its the truth. But RedBull could have some clever trickery on their car they dont want to show off to the public. But then again they could just show and test the car without it at the first test. Unless its something embedded in the chassis.

Caterham also use the same power unit and they are coming, are they not? I don't think the blame can be put on renault.. yet.

It wouldn't be unheard of for red bull to miss first pre-season test, but this year is very different so it's very unlikely.

@holm - i know what your saying. I'm just commenting on your potential reasoning. I just think reliability is king this year, even if you do have something special

@juzh - i'm just jumping on the renault bandwagon :)

I usually enjoy winter testing although if the reliability concerns pan out it could be very quiet on track and for the teams very frustrating as the clock just runs down everyday.

My reasoning for this - every time one of the cars breaks down out comes the red flag the tow truck ambles round picks up the broken car and returns to pit. Total time 15 minutes. Session last 8 hours (not sure if there's lunch hour at Jerez?) going by the hype - at least 2 breakdowns an hour leaving 4 hours total green flag running a day. Take away time to set up car, change parts etc in the garage. Therefore even if your car is the most reliable you might get 40 laps per day and that's if the weathers good. Admittedly Bahrain should be better as the weathers good all day.

No danger of any team hitting 15,000 km limit!!

It's been whispered that they may not be coming and as said, with TR confirmed to be attending, they'd get plenty of data on the Renault 'power unit'. With ERS failure being race ending, I'd wager that the radical packaging of the past that almost sacrificed KERS will go.
