Unsure of the accuracy……..

I would love making our own engine. It's the only way you control 100% of your outcomes.
The McLaren designed, Ricardo built engine in the Artura is fantastic. They know something about this

They couldn’t fire up either cars before the race. There was an issue with Landos battery (probably failed). Oscars car was an easier repair to make but obviously didn’t have enough time to fix it before the lights went out.

Confirmed battery failure, he’s lost one of his batteries from his pool.

If this is the kind of work McLaren is doing, then I believe Lando when he is saying later in the season they will be back on top. That's crazy.

After the embarrassment of Bahrain 2022  they seem to have committed long term to get, not just up to speed, but to extend into more searching examination of potential and capabilities.

Very good to see how intense and productive that process has been. Great attention to detail and application in that image.

Certainly, its woken up other teams to also raise their game too, as we've seen in this years cars generally.

Absolutely beautiful to the engineering eye, I see Duffman signed it as well :)

why lando missed 20 mins of FP1:
he went out at the start with the aero rake, completed one lap before being called in (as the team felt they’d collected enough data). it took longer than just removing the rakes and alex brundle reported that mechanics were working under the engine to adjust the front ride height; the theory was the front of the car was likely bottoming out.

According to team live feed: Lando called back in the pits at the checquered flag, before grid launch practice, with an issue spotted.
They worked between sessions for a hydraulic leak, and still in the garage with FP2 already started.
Not bad to start the weekend with P3 and P4 for FP1.

The straight speed is there :D Oscar looking like sitting duck vs Alpine and, specially, Ferrari.

Norris with a hydraulic leak now it’s a green light for FP2:

Nice to read this on team feed: "Big team effort on Lando's car with most of Oscar's crew coming over to help out now their car is away". Every lap counts.

Lando in thec ar now, 22 minutes in the session. Huge time lost by the #1
Meanwhile, good laps for OP81. P2 (+0.048 vs LEC) and now on soft.

P1 and P4 for FP2. Not bad beating Mercedes in this practice (with Oscar) and also good laps for Lando who sat 23 minutes in the garage due to hydraulic leak.

Andrea Stella says he's "confident" that McLaren will be fighting for podiums & victories on merit in 2026.

"I think the MCL40 is a very high-potential platform. At the moment, our car, when we compare it to Ferrari and Mercedes, suffers a bit of a deficit in grip. So, Ferrari and Mercedes are faster than us in the corners.

I think compared to Mercedes we see that we are probably underexploiting the power unit a little bit. It was better in China compared to Australia. We are on a steep learning curve when it comes to getting the most out of the power unit, which is positive, and we are working very well with HPP to make sure that we get on top of all the potential, extracting all the potential that is available in the power unit.

But coming back on the chassis side, we understand exactly what to do in terms of putting in place the actions to improve the chassis furthermore. In fact, it’s just about bringing upgrades that will increase the aerodynamic efficiency. These will happen in the next couple of events, so I think from there we should see a positive trajectory and we are confident that McLaren will be in condition to compete for podiums and victories on merit within this season."

McLaren higher on power settings. +11 kph on the main straight to its engine supplier. Available power seems to be close in all other acceleration zones, slightly down on the backstretch, and unlikely to be just a different depl. strategy. Worth around 0.4s. Main weakness: high-speed esses.

Ferrari no ENG 1 setting on Q-sims. Lower power available everywhere bar 7-8 compared to Merc PU cars. A bit in the engine but with the usual deficit to Merc PU. Competitive in corners, but concedes benchmark tag to Mercedes. Main losses are straights and final chicane. Work on balance is required. More consistency is needed.

Mercedes exceptional in S1 esses. No apparent weaknesses. Derating before timing line costs P1. Kimi's lap left out due to data artifact. Comfortable margin at the front.

And the #FP2 data in a better graphical format.
Image

The initial #McLaren surge is evident, with tons of energy squeezed out on exit from the chicane. Mercedes recovers from there and goes super strong even on the climb to Turn 7. Piastri holds up well at the hairpin, but Antonelli is by far the fastest in the back straight and the super clipping zone, as expected. It's not enough for the young Italian Mercedes driver, though, because Piastri pulls away again on exit from the chicane and grabs P1. An interesting battle—the Aussie seems in top form, haven't seen him drive this well in a while; let's see if he confirms it in qualifying to try and fight for the front row, even if in the race it's tough for McLaren to hold the pace.
Ferrari defends well in the hairpin section, but suffers too much over the rest of the track. Top priority at Maranello is finding the balance to challenge McLaren on race pace—on a single hot lap, it doesn't look like an easy matchup.
