They were in fuel saving mode form lap 8 onwards.

After he messed up the start he probably settled for second knowing it´s the first race.
Then SC comes out and of course out of the three, he is the one losing a spot.

Or 10 seconds, then gets stuck behind Perez for a while as well.

We will see at the end of the season who has the most points of them.

Both McLaren drivers did – they massively misscalculated the fuel load.

I wonder why. Just an honest mistake?

That's their current explanation, yes... Who knows though.

I didn't see any evidence for that at all.

I think they're referring more to ever diminishing returns the more refined a car is.

I can't speak for CHT obviously but my post was just talking of understanding the B-spec car. That car has only done the Melbourne mileage plus some 50-odd laps in Barca - I'm not convinced Red Bull understands how to set it up fully quite yet

True, but we're depending on assumptions as to how refined the cars are and how much improvement can come through refinement. RB's design may have seen more development hours spent on it than McLaren's. Or it may just be a worse design that can't be developed as much.

Or, they could be right and RB will overtake McLaren within a few races - we just don't know.

Either way, the logic behind the argument is faulty.

Right, but that makes an assumption that they're all heading towards the same global minima. It's far more likely, especially with McLaren's rather different philosophy that they're heading towards different local minima.

I had picked Button to win the race before qualifying happened. I'm not sold on Lewis' mental state being fixed...he's a fast driver but I think Jenson will collect more points because I trust his mental state more than Lewis nowadays. He's a smarter driver IMO...but it is only one race so we'll see how everything looks in another few months.

I think as far as this race was concerned - there was nothing mentally in the wrong place for Lewis - just that he generally is still a balls-out flat out driver and less of a strategic thinker

The evidence is that Martin Whitmarsh said "damn, we could have had a 1-2 if we'd not misscalculated fuel and run in engine mode 4 for most of the race" (paraphrasing somewhat)

Segedunum Munudeges Cilurnum choses not to believe Martin.

Fair enough – I tend to believe people when they say "damn, that was dumb as ---, we suck" (or words to that effect) – they tend not to have alterior motives for that.
