And the final points positions his tyres gave up.. this one killed me.

https://streamin.me/v/eec990f2
He didn't hit himself in the helmet cause his tires gave out. It was already too late there, he made a judgement call in turn 5, tried to go in harder and carry more speed but it didn't work. Had to come off the throttle and lost 2 tenths. He was closer to TSU before turn 5. Also TSU has a faster car, catching him isn't that easy.

In his defense they had just switched to STRAT 6 the lap before.

P9 was on cards today for ALO without any VSC and SC. Both Williams and Ferrari's would have overtaken due to their pace.
how so? I know Alonso kept mentioning how unlucky they were, but honestly the team wasn't in a good position before the VSC either:

At that point, everyone but Norris (and Colapinto maybe) still had to do another pit stop, and Aston was running in P14 and P15, setting lap times slower than most one-stoppers. How were they supposed to move up at all?

A good pitstop under green at Imola is 30 seconds. Alb, Had, Ant, Ham, Hulk, Bear and Tsu all were less than 30 seconds ahead of Alonso They were all lapping at relatively the same pace or slower and had to pit. Meaning Alonso would haven pulled ahead of them when they would pit.

Well now that they have a car capable of Q3 on merit they should be on for double points in Monaco. If the Barcelona updates can bring a bit more race pace then this could be a quite good year. IIRC Williams has already shifted 100% to 2026 so if AM gets even a little step ahead of them in the coming weeks they won't be able to fight back with updates of their own and there's still a long season ahead for Aston to chip away the gulf of points between them.

We dont know that yet. It could be more difficult than Imola.

but Aston would have pitted again as well?! I seriously doubt the plan was to do to a 50-lap final stint.

The most important thing this wekend was "FINALLY THEY PUT SOMETHING IN THE CAR THAT IMPROVED AFTER 2 YEARS" and improved A LOT comparing Miami, is that HUGE news, specially about next year. Barcelona will be a game changer, remember. Even Horner say before Australia " In Barcelona will starts a new championship". For now, we need stay tunned for see Aston will be capable to still improve in Monaco and Barcelona. But, they need make a better work about estrategies and pit stops, is so much common aston's pit be around 3.5 or almost 4 s, it too slow. Great news this wekend, who remeber the atmosphere after Imola 2024?
For the FIRST time since Alonso came in Aston Martin we didnt heard that disaster phrase " we need learn more about this package to improve it" FINALLY.

There is bit of speculation here and hence possibility of p9.

I remember prediction told on f1tv that "ALB would come right along with ALO in case he pits" and this was before that VSC.

If ALO was managing and was conservative with hard tyres and wanted to use them them to defend once ALB, HADJ, HULK etc pit, he had the possibility.

okay, my assumption was that Aston (same as Russell, Leclerc etc) was on a 2-stopper, so had to pit again. Even with 20 lap old tires they had no chance to defend positions after the VSC

Yep, it's typically a 1 stop race.

Agreed, plus Monaco is a one off race where you throw all the DF you can at it. That being said, the low speed DF looked significantly better @ Imola than Miami and we were still getting great top speed up the hill into turn 2.

you're right, I just checked the onboards, and with 49 to go they indeed told Alonso "All the cars we're racing that have stayed out are still within our pit window. We just need to make sure we get this to the end and have some tires left."

So without the VSC they would have moved up significantly again, but to be honest, I still think it would have been impossible to defend against cars with 30 lap better (and partly softer) tires.

Probably would have been hard to defend against Albon. The others, there was a high probability. It's hard to pass at Imola, after 10 laps the large tire advantage is lost and the advantage isn't large enough to pass.....That's the hope anyways.

Ant would have come out 10 sec behind..... takes atleast 10 laps to make that up. Plus Alonso could go faster but he's just doing the minimum to keep his tires fresh...while those guys that would come out behind would have to push hard which increases the wear rate.

Realistically the Barcelona updates are in some way connected to the new FW rules, otherwise they would have brought it already this week. Hopefully AMR can get nearer to the front with the new rules.

definitely, just hoping with the new wind tunnel and newey they might find a little something extra compared to before. Also hopefully that the imola upgrades carry onto the next races. I'm still reserving judgment after those canada 23 upgrades where we finished p2 but the car would regressed after it
