They detected a problem on Friday, they decided to change the engine for the whole Saturday.

They prefer not to risk the new engine, analyze it and be used later. Good for Hartley and TR.
Not really, they said the issue was reported towards end of FP3. He was running ok in FP3. It does not spund terminal but then we know what minor issue means to Honda
Can be. I heard it on Movistar by Albert Fabgrega. But nothing is official.
Changing an engine in 2 hours is also a short time. The logical thing is that he was already in the car in FP3

Theres a japanese f1 reporter who is glued to Honda, his picture showed engine change after Fp3 due to limited time to inspect the fault between FP3 and Quali.

Q1 was a good back to back comparison of the two engines versions. Looks like a good step. Great Q1 lap from Hartley.

Cheers,
@ http://en.hondaracingf1.com/races/2018/ ... -prix.html
"The final practice session on Saturday morning saw an encouraging performance with both cars competitive in the midfield, before Pierre reported a loss of power at the end of the session. With time tight ahead of qualifying, a complete power unit change was required while investigations take place into the issue, meaning Pierre will use the previous specification of power unit for qualifying and the race."

So it seems the engine was changed between FP3 and Quali. It seems the old spec will be used in the race also.
Now we need to see if the fault was minor or not. Let's hope it's just integration 8)
On the other side it's seems it is a great upgrade and we can compare more of it tomorrow

Why can't they take a new PU for Gasly? any rule preventing them? Only 4 place drop and a brand new PU for rest of the year.

Maybe they just don't have another new spec on hand?

Does look encouraging but I wonder though how much of the difference is down to degradation and loss of power on the 5 race old unit?

Every part is hand crafted, it would be allot of work to built 2 extra units.

"We had an issue with the engine in P3, with the new upgrade, we had to revert to the engine [we used] in Monaco," Gasly told Sky Sports after the session.
"On a track like Canada the top speed is massively important and it made qualifying quite tough. It's always frustrating to miss out with such a small gap."

Honda's technical director Toyoharu Tanabe explained: "Towards the end of this morning's free practice, Pierre's engine showed a drop in power.

"As a precaution, we decided to change the entire unit.
"We will now examine everything closely to identify the cause of the problem."

Asked about the benefit of the new specification, Gasly said: "The speed in the straight, when you put the power down you have more from the engine.
"On a track like Canada where you have such long straights, the gain of lap time is quite important."

Hartley, using the new specification, had progressed comfortably through the first qualifying segment and will line up 12th on Sunday.
"The positive, Brendon did a good job with the upgrades so I just can't wait to put this back on my car as soon as possible," Gasly said.
"Looking at the positives, it's good for the coming races. It'll just be quite difficult for our side of the garage tomorrow.
"I'm always full of hope. In racing, everything can happen. It won't be easy but racing never is. I just need to give it all and see what we can get tomorrow."
