Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez got to know the RB19 for the first time today at Silverstone during a filming day
(maximum 100 kilometers). Prelude to test days in Bahrain on February 23, 24 and 25. ⬇️

Max Verstappen makes first meters in new car

By Erik van Haren

Max Verstappen made his first meters on Friday at the Silverstone circuit in the RB19, his car for the upcoming Formula 1 season.

The two-time world champion and his teammate Sergio Pérez came into action during a filming day of his team Red Bull Racing. In total, a maximum of one hundred kilometers may be covered and driving on demo tires. It is an opportunity for the team to check all systems and really test the car on the asphalt for the first time. Red Bull is expected to release images of the secret test at a later date.

For Verstappen, the film day at Silverstone, not far from the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes, has become a well-known prelude to the start of the season. The test days in Bahrain will follow on 23, 24 and 25 February. More than a week later, on March 5, the first Grand Prix of the year is scheduled there.

Red Bull's sister team, AlphaTauri, has scheduled a filming day at the Misano circuit in Italy on Tuesday 14 February. The racing team with drivers Nyck de Vries and Yuki Tsunoda will present the new car – the AT04 – in New York next Saturday.

A Red Bull car finished weeks before pre-season testing? We're in a new era

They just pushed the RB18 out and used that instead of designing a whole new car haha.

Was the change facilitated indirectly by the cylinder plating?
Yes. The 620 was "testing grounds" for the plating process. Although it had a good track record with motorcycle engines, a higher compression, boosted ICE is not the same. The wear was much better than expected and provided additional confidence to move ahead with a new block design and manufacturing process.

Max said he felt good in the car in sim, now says everything went smooth. It is kind of scary when Max finds things good

That is good to hear.. balance is probably much more to his preference then =D>

Hopefully he'll be dancing with the car on edge again this season, like it was at spa!

Exactly what we wanted to hear from Max at this very early stage.

Good correlation between the sim and the car - Check!
Good initial impressions of the RB19 - Check

You just know from those few lines that its going to be a good car.

You are reading way too much into his comments… A filming day before testing is simply a systems check, everything works, the car runs without any major issues, therefore everything went “smooth”… They also use the though for it’s actual intended purpose, which is to film the car for promotional reasons… We will see several videos later on of the car at Silverstone, followed by a camera car, a drone, etc.

They haven’t done any performance runs, tuning, setup or anything of the sort in a filming day… That’s what testing is for… Could it be better than the RB18, sure… They have a great base and most probably it will be a great car, but today’s running won’t let them make an assessment.

I'm well aware of all of the logistics/limitations of a filming day.. but max himself has in the past said in other interviews when asked about filming day that you can feel the balance and general feel of the car even in the limited running that you get

And last season Russell said that from the first lap in the filming day he knew something was wrong with the car (perhaps due to it feeling so different to the simulator - first warning sign of a correlation error), so you know these things aren't that black and white as you are suggesting

They said that when the season was ending… No mention of issues after their filming day… Even when they weren’t actually driving the real W13 at that stage, no mention of any issues… Even McLaren who started the season with one of the worst performing cars in Bahrain didn’t said anything negative after the filming day (they actually were trying hard to lower expectations after Barcelona where everyone, including the “pundits” where praising them.

Max simply stated that it was a good first impression, everything work really well, everything was really smooth… No assessment in regards to correlation, balance or anything of the like.

Well Shovlin's statement is from the end of the season. Russell mentioned it towards the start of the season when it was all the rage in response to being asked when he first noticed the porpoising (and he said the filming day it was so obvious immediately). Yes they came away from Barcelona like everyone else thinking they were going to be fine. They had the extra confidence of not having unveiled their race-ready specification and didn't know how deep-rooted and performance limiting the porpoising would be. That doesn't undermine my point that unlike you suggested, filming days can provide feedback as to how the car is. If there's a difference between the simulator and the testing day then that's a worry. Absence of worries = good

Yes he did say it was a good first impression... and I made a short extrapolation of Max's contentment to the car feeling good. Considering he's given very reserved reactions after shakedowns in the past & tends to wear his heart on his sleeve, I saw it as a good sign that things are on track

You're making a fan's off-the-cuff comment in a team thread into a bigger deal than it is #-o
