Mercedes GP MGP W01

Very very stupid. It seems that they are just banning anything that appears innovative these days. No wonder Newey is getting bored. How did we come to the point in the sport where a designer finds himself bored with F1?

Somethings gotta be done.

Well ---, I didn't know they were banned for next season. I wonder if we'll see much in terms of innovation next year aero wise then. I guess we'll see a bunch of RB clones next year. I expect a lot of teams to run a full EBD.

On another note, Brawn stated that this year's W01 was too conservative in design.

"At the beginning of 2009 we had to reduce staff, and this obviously had an impact on many sectors," Brawn told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

"When the time came to design the 2010 car, our design office wasn't well organised. What came out of it is a scarcely ambitious car, in fact too conservative.

"But we couldn't do otherwise, because resources were not sufficient. For 2011 we have a group of young engineers who want to show their worth, so we are ambitious again."

I'm not so sure about that, given that Double Decker Diffusors are banned next year. I expect there's less gain to be had by blowing a single deck diffusor, although I'm sure the Aero guys can advise.

Blowing the diffuser will still provide a huge addvantage over not. With a single deck diffuser, more emphasis will be placed on making sure the beam wing works well with the diffuser and exhaust gases imo

But do these "young" engineers have any experience of what is required in Formula 1 design?

When people are talking about a Full EDB, are you meaning that the exhausts will exit directly into the diffuser?

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Brawn has been saying this all along. The news here is that he thinks these young designers have good potential. It doesnt take a genius to work out that a team losing half its manpower will go backwards(whatever detractors say...you cannot have 400 tea ladies!!! )

I reckon Mercedes will be far more competitive in 2011. Xpensive even has a nomex suit on it!

Experience helps things get done properly, but youthful creativity can deliver the "big blows." It's like me and my supervisor. As and elderly man he knows how to gets things done, but most of the time find his ideas very conservative and old timey...
I think the combination of youth and experience can't be beat.

That would be too much energy especially with a smaller diffuser. You have to only use a certain amount of energy and shoot it in the right part of the diffuser. That was the trouble that Mercedez, Ferrai and mclaren were having. Look at the bent exhaust tips and all the guide vanes, cut-outs and floor undulations to see the trouble that these guys have to take on to distribute the gasses properly.

maybe the thing might move towards the solution invented by Galmer with Alan Mertens
transforming the exhaust pipes into fishtails ending on the top of the difusser forming their trailing edge over the entire width of the difusser this way around the difusser was effectively elongated by the hot air exiting the tailpipes(claimed
Mertens).
With turbo engines coming (will they have wastegates?) it might even be possible to do things with the wastegate exhausts as well?

Ohhhhh very interesting! =D>

Seems quite a drastic change!

Maybe we have a W01.5?

With 3 races to go, and with their focus on 2011? :wtf:

It could, however, be used as a great testing session. But I'm not sure... would it violate the chassis homologation regs?
