Since the sixties, racing has been forced to slow down the action. Before that, cars simply got faster and faster each year—those were the glory days. Nascar was forced to regulate wings when the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona and 1970 Plymouth Road Runner SuperBird with wings extended four feet above the rear deck dominated the sport. It was projected that speeds would soon approach 240 MPH. In 1987 Mario Andretti qualified at Indy at 215 MPH. That same year Bill Elliott qualified his Winston Cup car at Talladega at 212 MPH—that’s in a 3,400 pound “taxicab” with skinny tires!
Bobby Allison had a horrific crash at Talladega almost ending up in the stands. It could have been as bad as the Mercedes crash at LeMans in the 1955. That's when NASCAR introduced restrictor plates.
I am an F1 fan because of the technology and because the cars differ, but the reality is that ALL racing is moving closer and closer to spec racing whether we like it or not.
