I happen to be employed by an oil company sponsor of those nice chaps in red cars. (for some reason I feel compelled to add here that I have been a Ferrari fan since long before I joined Shell, in fact they were sponsors of McLaren when I joined ).
I have no direct involvement in the sport, although for a period my division shared an admin office with the sponsorship people, so I saw some pretty interesting faxes between my company and theirs.
I feel an affinity my Ciro, as my area of expertise is at the important, but not so interesting (for most) part of the show, the track; bitumen (Ciro knows it as Asphalt) is the part of the business I do my work in. However, whilst working in London was involved in discussion of specifications for the resurfacing of the Fiorano circuit, Sepang, Bahrain and some modifications at Hockenheim. Furthermore, I had the good fortune to run a training course with one of our fuels guys who led the F1 Research & Development programme... I spent quite some hours drinking many beers and discussiong some of the finer points of fuels, and lubricants in respect of engine performance. However, although I regularly visited the lab where the work is carried out when I was UK based, the area where the Ferrari engines were kpt was under rather tight security, so I was not allowed to go and snoop ( )
Although it was not my company involved I also have a cube of surface from the F1 part of the Indy circuit on my desk - and was given a tour of the track whilst it was under construction.
