This will help in the fight for third in the constructors
I think this is a joke. Stripping Racing Point of just 15 points and imposing a petty fine does not solve the problem or help anyone.

If Racing point gets to use all the parts as before, I think this is a good deal for them. They could potentially finish the year on 4th or 5th place which would mean millions of dollar in revenue end of the year (They will easily make much more than what they are paying now as penalty)

McLaren was the only team I can remember which was shamed and a $100mn fine was imposed as an outcome of spygate scandal. FIA continues to cover up what Ferrari did last year (clearly cheating) and now Racing Point
It's because the FIA deemed the front ducts legal, they are only being penalised on the rear brake ducts.
Spygate was clearly to do with issues between Ron and Max. But as much as people dislike the Pink Mercedes, they have only really been pulled up on a technicality and that instance, while it stings Mclaren fans still, isn't and shouldn't be a precedent for punishments in F1.

What is interesting is that Mercedes say they did give them the design last year, when it was legal to do so, but that RP overstated how much work had gone into the designs themselves.

I'll probably get shouted down but I don't think it is a big deal still, they tried to push the rules to the limit and got caught. But to me that is F1 ! A team like Mclaren should, and I believe will, be able to rise above a car from last year eventually, possibly even with a Mercedes engine in the back next year. For now I'll take the 15 points and feel like we might actually be able to hold them off this year.

Can anyone explain why the team chose Paul Di Resta as our reserve driver? He has not proven to belong in F1. Why not go for Jenson Button? Surely, I hope it won’t be necessary to replace Lando or Carlos, they are great. But if there is need to replace one, let it be JB. He knows and loves McLaren, great ambassador for our team, he is always super fit with these triathlons, and he is an F1 Champion. He proved he could go up against Lewis.

On top of all that, I am biased as hell. I was a big fan and I would enjoy to see him back. Even for one GP. Will be different from Monaco 2017. This time he will have a car he can fight with.

but Jenson's British GT team is running McLarens and he won this weekend. I think the clear answer is that McL needed someone with a super license who is already in an F1 COVID bubble and would be easily available at short notice.
Jenson has a new family and lives in America for the most part. I also think Jenson is carrying some penalty for the shocking crash that he caused during his one-off return at Monaco.

Does anyone know if the DiResta arrangement is for the rest of the season or only for this GP?

I'd love to see Button as cover but maybe he doesn't want to. PdR is a poor backup now, but to be fair to him he wasn't too bad in his racing days, nothing special, but better than some I thought.

Wish we had a Hulkenberg Esque driver..... Shame we soured our relations with Vandoorne and sent him off to Mercedes.

Stoffel was lined up to be a reserve driver for McLaren, along with Racing Point and Mercedes. Unfortunately he is tied up with formula E like many other drivers who would qualify

Not really, the only issue in modern times has been the RP this year (Torro Rosso but rules where slightly different then). Its so blatant its not really hard to see. Learning from other cars and taking concepts onboard for your own design is ok and the difference is quite clear to see

Yeah but it's putting it into a coherent and enforceable rule that is fair and without loopholes, not the idea of it. The idea of it is sound.

People copy all the time in F1 and how do you draw the line, what is too much, what is the method of proving it was copied? How much of a change does someone need to make to make a design their own? How similar or dissimilar
. It just sounds very tricky to pin down. One of the remarks was photos, but Adrian Newey will just stroll up to a car and stare at it with his x ray flow vision eyes. I hope they do it, I prefer not to have teams copying way too much like RP. I applaud RP for doing it, but I prefer to make sure it doesn't become the rule and not the exception.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Button is not around for all the races while Di Resta might be. Both work with Sky and maybe it's just logistics.

Jenson's super license has probably lapsed by now. Di Resta still has his after his Williams run a few years ago. Di Resta is also a former McLaren young driver during his Formula Renault days, just remembered that just now.
