Usual merc fp2 -> fp3 jump. Ok, this one was quite big, but I certainly wasn't expecting them languishing in lower top 10 based on fp1-fp2.

Wolff post-FP3 said that the car performed much better on softs than it did on hards/mediums.

Ah so we are catching up after all. Wow. When this car bolts on the high downforce package it is quite good. Max left a little bit out there for sure, didn't have a good sector one, but well done by Lewis and Merc. I still think we can catch these guys by year's end. Let's go.

The car was probably equal best to RB in slow corners. Lewis was consistently purpling the slow corners in S3 and also T1 every now and then.

The new front wing has definitely helped, but they are probably lacking a little in medium/high-speed corners.

For sure, also they aren't as competitive on the harder compounds for whatever reason. But progress is what I was hoping to see, and there has been progress, it's just that the Mclaren has entered the conversation as well.

Just some perspective. Merc had pole here last year. It was that pole that got blamed for another year of misery. This concept just goes well on the hungaro ring.

A pole is a pole to be fair. Merc can at least savor today. It's certainly a morale boost for the team, and may give leadership some breathing room from bean counters who don't understand the complexity of development and the restrictions.

Good quali from Lewis today. Georges was just a mess. Too late and too hesitant to maintain order at the final corner to get a lap in. Cost him dearly that mistake. But its the risk you take leaving it til the very end without a good banker.

I thought that little slide at the end for Lewis blew his chances, but somehow he managed to just keep enough to nip it ahead of Max. I think everyones softs were on the edge at the end of a hot lap with the temperatures.

Should be a good race tomorrow.
