Interesting quote from G. Russell: "We understand why we were slow in Spa and why we are faster this weekend, so I think these two races have been key to our understanding of how to make a faster car across 23 races.”
They have been telling their fans after every race that the have an "understanding".
Guess we will see in 2023 how well they understood. :?

1/2 a metre to keep hold of given the fastest part of the track.

Impressive couple corners, but I still bet would lose 1/2 car length along that straight.

You only have to look at the 100m board into the first corner to see the difference.

Merc was consistently 2-3 tenths slower on the run to the line. This would not have been a sufficient gap to beat Max or Charles.

T11-12 is essentially Merc's strongest part of the track, so it's not surprising they were slightly ahead there. But the remaining part was their weakest part of the track.

Fully agreed.

Wonder if anyone has a onboard of the laps previously showing the merc and the red bull/Ferrari at the start of the final corner and to the line. That would give you a decent indication of what gains/loses there would be in that final sector.

I don’t have F1TV or it would have done it.

F1-tempo telemetry shows Lewis on his first run in Q3 loses over 3 tenths to Max from T13 to the line. Russell loses over 2 tenths on his fastest lap over the same piece of track.

Merc was actually on average slower than RB and Ferrari in sector 3 as a whole, despite being really fast in T11/T12. But their straight line performance was quite poor so they lost out on the whole. This is why it's important to consider entire sectors and not draw conclusions based on two super slow corners when the cars have very different strengths. We got to see Merc's strong part on that final Lewis lap, we did not get to see the weak part. I think he would have finished in P4 or P3, certainly not front row.

Do you think Merc might challenge for this one ?

As Max simply explained. No.

As much as it would be good to see them challenging, I think they will be a bit of a sitting --- on the straights with the DRS.
Might be half decent pace wise through the tighter corners or the twisty bits, but little overtaking chances and guess you will need a much faster car to make it stick.

What was interesting in the comparison video is still the amount of bouncing/porpoising going into and around the corners. I wonder how that shapes up with the metric the FIA has set

Why didn't they pit Lewis during the safety car? They could have told George to stay 10 cars behind, they had Albon in between Lewis and George too, and then he could pit and stay ahead of Max.

Poor restart by Lewis though, he should have waited to go at the start finish line as car behind must stay behind rear wing of car in front now.

What an absolute disaster, giving the car behind the best strategy, while screwing the 7-time wdc who had a potential win. I can’t believe the team allowed this. They shouldn’t have split the strategy at that point. Ridiculous.

Remember though that pitted cars have to come back into the pitlane and on to the track.
They could easily have got 2 cars between them as it was safety car and bunched
