George sat in Lewis' car in 2020 and almost put it on pole with barely any feel for the car and with great deal of inconvenience in a cockpit that wasn't made for him, just 0.026 adrift of Valtteri. He would have won if not for the Merc pit blunders. Antonelli comes with far bigger hype than George, but so far, the one lap speed doesn't justify it. I liked the way he raced in Melbourne and I think he has the stuff to be a top driver.AR3-GP wrote: ↑22 Mar 2025, 00:39Kimi was within 1 tenth of George on the runs in SQ1 and SQ2. He's never raced at this circuit. He's never done the 1 shot soft tire runs with this car that is new to him. He made a mistake in T1 on his single run in SQ3. That's it.nitrotech wrote: ↑21 Mar 2025, 16:54Antonelli is so far out from George in qualifying. It has always been George's forte, but I wasn't expecting the gap to be that large, regardless of the tire warmups. Anyway, on the upside, he doesn't have anything to lose at this stage and should go aggressively at the start to gain some places and he would get another shot at qualifying tomorrow.
George is impressive but it doesn't have to come at the expense of Antonelli. You don't know how much better Hamilton could have done in that Bahrain race so I don't understand why that must mean that Antonelli should be beating George on 1 lap in his 2nd ever qualifying at a circuit which he has never raced on before. George had atleast. 2 seasons under his belt when he substituted for Hamilton so he was no rookie so again the comparison is not a fair one.nitrotech wrote: ↑22 Mar 2025, 17:06George sat in Lewis' car in 2020 and almost put it on pole with barely any feel for the car and with great deal of inconvenience in a cockpit that wasn't made for him, just 0.026 adrift of Valtteri. The way Lando is struggling to put consistent qualifying performances, George's performances stacks in a different level altogether with that of Max. He kept experimenting with the warm-ups, but always produced good laps, until the last one which was great.
Because George was promoted to a Williams. The Antonelli hype is exaggerated by the direct promotion to Merc. George was just as good (if not better) a prospect.nitrotech wrote: ↑22 Mar 2025, 17:06George sat in Lewis' car in 2020 and almost put it on pole with barely any feel for the car and with great deal of inconvenience in a cockpit that wasn't made for him, just 0.026 adrift of Valtteri. Whoa bro, I know George Qualified 2nd but still, Race pace is not his biggest strength unless he can improve it through the season. But no need to put down Antonelli because, he's still a rookie at the end of the day and it's only his 2nd F1 race. Plus, Toto knows what he has, so he's not clueless to what Mercedes have.
All depends on the development of the Mercedes or should I say, depends of the development of all top 4 teams. Which will be crucial for WDC & WCC.
So Russel's theory that McLaren is 6 tents ahead was all mind games
