That said. The achievement to win a race in the first season for these regulations as a customer shouldn’t be underestimated.

Russell’s comments early in the season of: ‘Mclaren have the same PU’ (and aren’t winning) was just farcical upon reflection

It was a big lie from the start. The fact that Mercedes kept the best version of the engine to test it for themselves during the whole testing season only to give it at the last minute before the race with a basic manual says a lot. Then they found some way to withhold information regarding reliability solutions and performance extraction not to mention getting the latest version of the engine after the other customers. Pity that the FIA is incompetent to have clear cut rules without loopholes and unable to enforce them.

Usually in Greece but this year were other plans with kids going to University, so I remain with the trip to Spielberg for AustrianGP and, I hope, to end with AbuDhabiGP if Mr. Trump allows

Interesting article also on mclaren.com about how the MCL40 has evolved during the first half of the season and what’s to come after the summer break:

+ Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, discussed the significant upgrades made to the MCL40 during the Hungarian Grand Prix, describing them as a "correction of the course" after analyzing rival teams. Speaking to media, Stella elaborated:

“I think the improvement from a competitiveness point of view can be entirely ascribed to the upgrades that we [delivered in Hungary].”

“We were thinking that this lap time step would not necessarily have been enough to be on pole position at the Hungaroring, and definitely did not think they would be enough to have such a strong pace in the race.”

— Despite the success, Stella emphasized the need for continuous development to remain competitive:

“Honestly, I still believe that if we want to be in a position to fight for victories consistently in the future, we need to keep our focus on delivering more upgrades. That is the plan. But we are not naive.”

— Stella highlighted the competitive nature of the 2026 season, noting the importance of ongoing upgrades:

“We know that this will be the plan for all the teams, so I think, like it's always been in this 2026 season, it's a matter of a race of upgrades, and the good news is that McLaren is now back in this race of upgrades while fighting for the lead.”

But I expect that the car that will be the best car at the end of the season will keep adding tenths of a second in the next 11 races, probably as much as half a second, so there is definitely a lot of work ahead of everyone, not only McLaren.”

— Stella explained the conceptual changes introduced with the upgrades:

“I think the main aspect of these upgrades is that they introduce some parts that follow a slightly different concept in some areas of the car. We realised after we delivered the MCL40, and also to some extent looking at the concepts that were present in some cars that were faster than us, we realised that we needed to correct the course.”

“We know that when McLaren understands which direction to take, then I think we are in a condition to develop quite effectively.”

Makes it all the more satisfying beat them with their own power unit.

This sounds quite optimistic. Looking forward to it.

I know it sounds impossible but I wouldn't count out a championship run yet. If McLaren Hungary pace continues then Mercedes could end up losing a lot of points quickly.

He isn’t making a statement that McLaren will be the fastest car at the end of the season. He is saying that the car that will end up fastest in the season will be that car which will consistently be able to add performance across the next 11 races. Which is a little bit of a “No sh*t Sherlock” type of statement, but it’s the way Andrea usually speaks.

Correct Emag but he wouldn’t have said it if the didn’t think Mclaren could do it.

Yeah, I am just reading a bit between the lines, probably with papaya tinted glasses.

I think the last line is crucial, if they started with the wrong direction and now course corrected it looks very promising for the future. They will also have more development time now that ATR reset.

The balance between 2026 & 2027 is crucial. Personally I would focus earlier on 2027.

I’m not saying you are wrong but Houldey said the best simulation tool for 2027 is to put upgrades on the MCL40

What Stella means is that the MCL40 will be at its best by the end of the season, not that it will be the best car on the grid. (It might still be 🤞).

There’s a chance it won’t be the best car now that Houldey has openly admitted that the shorter wheel base is slightly aerodynamically disadvantaged.

The Race:
McLaren plans to introduce a new, more efficient rear wing at the Dutch GP - the first race after the summer break - and that aforementioned 'macarena' design will probably reappear for the following race at the high-speed Monza.

I think the concept Stella is refering to is the aero-balance. My guess is the increased loading to the rear of the car is proving the way to go and that is balanced out by the straight mode. In other words they are also discovering more effective drag reduction in straight mode.
