A shame to lose so much in what is essentially a long straight.
I still hope the motors aren't on. [-o<

Im starting to wonder if the Straight line speed issue I more to do with the rear Side-pod design than the Mercedes PU, I’m not claiming the PU isn’t a problem but considering that McLaren, Williams and Mercedes are the only teams with a very narrow rear side-pod section ( I.e a lot of exposed floor) , is it possible this is somehow linked to drag, as AMR who also have the same PU , but a wider and longer Side-pod are massively faster on the straits.
If we could have the sector 3 deficit of AMR we would be comfortably 3rd fastest by at least 2 tenths.

Must say though i am very impressed with the slow speed cornering which is a big asset to have this year. We just really really need to sort out the draggines die f the car

What is worrying me massively about the race is that we may be able to qualify 5-7 but will drop like a rock when alpine and others come with DRS on main straight

On the flip side, McLaren would have enough time in hand through the middle part to build a buffer, but it would need to be a decent buffer. Those running skinny could have higher tyre wear too.

I don’t think we are THAT draggy. So I still think it’s engine modes to some degree. Sort of expecting to be 0.2s off in clear air off the Alpine in S3. 0.5 just is too much. So I’m quietly optimistic

Tire management continues to be key and protecting them for the race is the path that I would take… They may also still be running lower engine modes, the difference on top speed is too large to just be drag:

I remember last year that the car was good in high speed straights. What happened this year?

I am generally very curious. What is hampering Mclaren from getting to 1st place all these years? Is it just the New Wind Tunnel and Simulator that they are missing or is it something more?

Do we know his timing when the lap was stopped? It's a pity though that these kind of F1 drivers exist while better drivers are waiting as test drivers.

There is a huge amount of danger one of the Mclarens or both might not make it in time.

Geez what a nail-biter! A quali race! Schumacher cheeky on Lando there. Both through to q2

Cant say it was an ideal lap having the Haas being a moving obstacle. I have a feeling neither will make it to Q3. We are losing so much time on that straight.

I was watching the onboard at the final rush we got eaten up on the straights... if that's anything for go by for tomorrow :( I think tomorrow the team needs to rely heavily on tyre strategy to gain positional advantages

What is Mclaren missing to make a car able to be competitive to the front? Is it just the Wind Tunnel and the Simulator waiting to be created that causes all that huge handicap or is it something more?

Last year we had a car that was excellent on straights and high speed corners but suffered a lot on medium and slow speed corners. This year we have a car that is good on corners generally but suffers on straights a lot.
