Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

still interresting since Red bull and Williams(and others too?) use an r shaped winglet in that area as it's vortex is beneficial in that area. Would rather have expected a smaller winglet in that area.

Yeah, I don't think it was generating raw downforce in itself. Some sort of flow conditioner IMO.

Yes, again, a la Lotus - that's better visible under ultraviolet light, and less visible on the track.

No, its Oliver Turvey.

I wonder why they got rid of the 'r' cascade on the new wing?

I'm sure they got rid of the r-cascade and are testing a more Lotus-esque front wing to examine the benefits of it. Lotus uses the large vertical strakes to control flow in a different manner than the r-cascades. If Mclaren can afford the resources to test out different design philosophies, then definitely more power to them.

I'm not so sure that it won't be permanent. The McLaren simulator and CFD facilities are always touted as the best - I don't think they'd have wasted manufacturing resources to test a part just like that. Obviously their CFD has shown some gain in numbers somewhere there.

Are they doing back-to-back testing on the old/new front wings?

they probably testing this front wing like new part for next year car. this season is practicly over for mclaren, this can be sign that MP4-28 follow different philosohpy of front wing, also mean different car then MP4-27

they were using almost the same philosophy since 2010. Time for sth new.

another question:
will we see the snow plug again if the high nose comes 2013?

i don't realy know, but 2013 is last year for current cars tehnical regulations. some teams will probably design a car with all current regulations, and some teams will already in their 2013 car design look for 2014. mclaren probably removed snow plug from their cars because of downforce lvl stability, we know that 2012 cars have much less rear downforce so if they put aero device on front of the car like snowplug, they will hurt overall downforce balance. if they find
the way to have good rear downforce in 2013, they can bring snow plug back. also this depend on other car espects
