Re: Why Mclaren didnt pick Paul Di Resta?

Cam wrote:Yes, I saw that news somewhere too. McLaren would sooner have the best driver than the best wallet IMO. Take Williams as an example - 2 paid drivers and yet they're nowhere really. Money doesn't outweigh performance and McLaren get that I think as has been shown time and again. If what Whitmarsh said is true, that Perez is no longer a paying driver, then this would backup the reasons for choosing form over cash.
I think the elephant in the corner is Vodafone leaving as title sponsors. Mclaren are also keen to expand into South America. Perez is bankrolled by TelMex, the largest Telco in Central and South America. For me, it really isn't too tricky to put all of thsi together and see TelMex as the title sponsors next year. Interestingly, Vodafone has a commercial strategic partnership with TelMex as well, and this further cements my view about the imminent move.

Spot on. Not that it would worry McLaren much with Mr Slim ready to bankroll a Mexican contender under the Telmex banner.
My only issue with this whole transaction is, will Perez be ready for this?
I think alot of the performances this year have been down to some very extenuating circumstances.

Firstly the Sauber has fantastic ability in making it's tyres last longer than the opposition, at certain tracks.
Secondly, Sauber have made extremely good use of this by strategising near perfect races for Perez.
You still need the driver to perform, and keep his nose clean. Perez has done that, but at some races he has been floundering.
In terms of pure speed, there is very little between Perez and Kobayshi particularly this year, where you could say the Japanese has a very slight advantage over Perez averaging an 11th to Perez 13.

Perez came alive during the second half of the podium races he achieved this year, but what will happen when he is in a McLaren and these strategy calls(a benefit of occasionally qualifying outside the top ten-tyre choice) will not benefit as much?
If I had to place money on Perez succeeding, I would. But something is niggling me, and I cannot put my finger on it.
One thing is for sure, Button will have an easier time of things in 2013.

I wonder when Esteban Gutierrez will make it into here, considering he just finished 3rd in his first season of GP2. You might say; "what, barely 3rd?!"... but those who finished ahead of him have been in the series since 2008! So I think he'll jump into the Sauber for 2014, if not next year. But I doubt it would be in 2013 because he still needs more experience before making the switch. Sauber could really use the Telmex sponsorship past the Perez era, and all I want is for our national talent to shine regardless of team.

Maybe one of the Force India drivers will take a place at Sauber, and Alguesari might come on board at Force India. Are Sauber considered to be an "upgrade" from Force India? Would it make sense for a driver to change teams for that?
Yer.

Sauber Drivers 2013

Post

Is Kobayashi a definite? Please say yes.

Any rumors or leaks or theories about who to replace him? I thought I saw someone mention Algesuari, but I don't know if that was a guess or had something behind it.

Re: Sauber Drivers 2013

I think Perez may have saved his bacon. There were profuse rumors that Peter Sauber was unhappy with Kamui and was going to replace him. Popular paddock rumor puts Charles Pic and Jaime Alguersuari as two potential drivers for the job. Hulkenberg is also apparently a frontrunner for the job, though other sources claim Hulkenberg to Ferrari 2013 is a done deal. Gutierrez is also waiting in the wings.

Even if Hulk to Fezza is a done deal - then Sauber still have 4 potentials. 4 into 2 does not go

I'm a staunch underdog supporter. I rarely find myself rooting for the driver in first. This year I was supporting Perez (While the GF went for Kobayashi). Last year I loved Algesuari and Kobayashi, so if Sauber went with them I would be so extatic next year. Two drivers I love at my fav midfield team and a chance to see Perez at Mclaren. soooo pumped

I don't really understand why people are expecting Alguersuari to have a seat, I must have missed something for the past two seasons.

An all Spanish line-up for Ferrari? That sounds about right. He will get along with Alonso well, won't he? :D

on his twitter account he stated"Soon you'll all know where i will be driving next year"
He might be talking about a different race series but I think he has secured a seat at Sauber.
