Let me put it another way... As a McLaren fan if you said you were gonna replace him with any other driver in F1.. I'd say sure why not.

Would it be unrealistic to say that Alonso will still be champion material even in 3 years?

If you look at the data, Vandoorne doesn't have bad pace. He's a rookie, he has trouble during starts, and re-starts after the safety car. The pace is there, he just has things he needs to work on, as the engine gets better the results will come.

Mclaren-Honda 2018.

This, mixed with the positive mood change we've from Alonso/Boullier/team in general, I'd say it's a done deal and they must start to show a united front as a team.

What else can they do ?. mclaren , alonso have no where to go. i do not think they have seen something exciting in term of engine development that convinced them to stay. no option for them but to hope and pray that honda will deliver.its twilight years for both mclaren and Alonso.

Honestly, I think Honda has agreed to put forward more $$$ to the project.

Vandorne has problem with his braking style. Im unsure how to train this kind of still, but it is getting better IMO. And as one of the tallest driver on grid, MCL has to put little less balast on chasis compared to Alo. Honda and MCL also not allow him to use aggressive mode. I think he is not a naturally gifted person as ves or ham, but with better approach i believe he can surpass Button, both personality and skill.

Like I said the only real difference is that Alonso is on maximum attack right away, Vandoorne needs to settle into a rhythm, but the pace is there, if you look at the race pace where both are in clean air there's nothing between them. I don't think anyone can switch it on like Alonso, that's probably what really makes the difference, the braking thing is somewhat related but doesn't tell the whole story.

Pretty much the same as posted before.

No decision made on 2018 yet. Just the public beating has been turned down a notch.

The public shaming that Mclaren does to Honda is probably to squeeze a better deal from the Japanese manufacturer. Makes sense if you think about it. They've lost a ton of sponsors since they've started in 2014, not to mention prize money. Surely the terms of their initial agreement shouldn't apply anymore

On Gazzetta dello Sport, an italian newspaper, they wrote that McLaren talked to Ferrari about the possibility to have their PU.

I'm starting to think it's all just a ploy to get Honda to dedicate more resources to their PU and perhaps to up what they are willing to pay towards McLaren in form of sponsorship and investment. Along the lines of - "we are not performing because of you, which is causing us to lose more sponsors, so you better jump in an pay for the losses we are having as a result of your PU".
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

I guess Mclarn has talked to Mercedes and Ferrari(the only good PU out there) just to know what chances they do have and then think if they have a better alternative tan Honda. Sadly, they haven´t so they must stay with Honda. Hopefully, this should pay off... someday.
