Often done because metal is ductile while carbon isn't, so if debris hits it the piece deforms but doesn't shatter and compromise the integrity of the fin.

It's no metal, it's the shade of the tire. Look at the floor next to the ridge, there you see a difference in color also.

it seems you are right, simply shadow indeed, look from the angle of today's china pics, def simply carbon, and this is that same new floor with the curved up and back inwards even shaped piece on the outside in front of the rearwheel

Radiator intake is also shortened a lot, that's also very impressive.

The main improvement probably comes from those two radiators (intercoolers?) that have been moved up near the airbox

I think it's the 2016 car, it has D. Kvyat name on it and the vertical rear wing.
Nevertheless great packaging on the new one!
