Antonelli has been driving around in the fastest car on the grid up until Hungary. How is he supposed to not be leading the championship?

In the last two races the car advantage shifted to another driver, mind you very slightly, and he lost to that driver both times, and if that trend continues he will struggle to win races like he was when he drove the fastest car on the grid.

Becoming a world champion in Formula 1 has little to do with how good of a driver you are.

The biggest issues right now is that in qualifying Leclerc and Hamilton found themselves often behind Piastri and Russell who are extremely slow.
Piastri pace in Zandvoort was beyond embarrassing. They need to make a step up in qualifying to avoid this exact scenario. Piastri and Russell are two massive liabilities at the moment. If a driver is behind them is game over.

unless track temps are high all weekend, it seems Ferrari is unable to heat the tires up quickly, without sacrificing race pace.

good memory, but didn't hamilton also use akebono at some time during his mclaren years?
I only heard of Brembo and CI. But that was 15-20 years ago. The way I heard it he tested both, and settled on CI ever since.

[How tired I grow of driver yin yang in the team thread…]

New engine apparently approved for Monza: https://www.crash.net/f1/news/1103152/1 ... italian-gp

This article claims 15 bhp (halving the deficit to Mercedes) but I’ve seen 10 elsewhere and generally in the 10-15 range. This one frames the shell fuel as additional but not sure that’s right - it’s basically part of the new engine’s performance increase imho.

New versions of Macarena wing as well supposedly.

One could say that yes you need a faster car but you also need a good lead driver to push the team.

People say that Ferrari could have won in 2022 if they had pushed development. Maybe if LH was there in 2022 he would have pushed them to the win.

I was at the race on Sunday and didn't really pick up the Lewis vs Leclerc frustration at track side. Watched the race again today. 3rd place was lost the moment Russel stopped early yo avoid the under cut.

Ferrari should have just moved Leclerc aside but it seemed they were focused on what to do with Leclerc, after all he came out 5+ seconds behind Russel when he did stop, so pitting was faster than moving aside and then pitting. Sure Hamilton was compromised in all of this but it was hardly one driver behaving in self interest above the team.

At the point of VSC Hamilton was miles behind Leclerc and set for 5th and the 1.6-3 seconds potentially lost were meaningless.

He was going to be much faster at key stages and 4th was relatively easy without the VSC.

The time lost was the opposite of meaningless with how the race played out and it's incredibly likely he would have finished 3rd without the delay behind his teammate. There were 100+ scenarios where the time would not have mattered, but in this race, on this day, it did matter.

You feel without the VSC he would have hunted down the gap of ~10 seconds to Leclerc and made the pass for an eady 4th?

Without the delay he would have come out behind Russel anyway, maybe that's 2 more laps at having a crack at Russle, I think it's probably 50/50 he gets the pass done for 3rd rather than incredibly likely.

The team seems actually stronger now. Less silly mistakes.

This one of not telling Leclerc to pull aside is a small one, but it could be a huge one if the car ever develops good enough to catch Antonelli.
Also pulling out Leclerc early, then bringing him in from hards for a pointless pit stop at the VSC. I can't say a singe thing they did right.
Their strategic and tactical ability is as horrible as we'we grown to expect.

It wouldnt be pointless. If he didnt stop Leclerc would have had no tyres in the end.

I have engaged both of our forum friends to request they get a PM between them.

There's limits to the power of a reasonable ask.. So it'll be warnings and deleting incoming.

I'll tidy up when I'm on a computer.

Of course he would have had tires, that's why he got hards. Antonelly and Russel easily finished with older hards.

During the race I thought the strategy was wrong all the way. Then, thinking about it, Lec and Ham were on different strategies (which is good given the starting position) and no one had the clear best pace or tyre when they bumped into each other. If Lec let Ham pass, it would have cost him at least 1.5 sec (and vice versa). They didn’t make the best strategy call, but the best for preserving both drivers motivation. Keep in mind, no one is fighting for WDC, but Ferrari could have a chance for WCC.

As just a fan said its the common sense. Look at how Mercedes immediately acted to help Antonelli defend his point lead without a second question.
