Well, I've gotta admit that I made a big mistake of replying with a hockey example, thus making my answer pretty confusing. To make matters worse, I kept switching between hockey and soccer (er, football).

Are you in the states or Canada then f1.redbaron? If the states, sorry bout the Cezch match, but the USA still played pretty well. I'm quite pleased Arsenal picked up Rocisky before the world cup...after those two goals his value would probably have nearly doubled!

Being a Czech, I am not sorry about the match  but it is not all about winning, it's also about sport. People tend to forget this.
You can play the match of your life and still lose...

What is soccer? :D

It is called football: soccer we do not know.

It is not american football, the almost unknown (outside México, Canada and USA) variant of rugby, if this is what you are asking, which, by the way, you could call handball if the name wasn't already taken. Football is the proper (and ancient!) name for the game that you see that mostly girls play in USA (and they do it well: I have played them to my astonishment). Most american men are too "big" to run for 45 minutes uninterrupted: certainly no guards or tackles I have seen could do it, maybe some wide receivers, and this only if they do less weight lifting.

Not to be picky, But american football is not like rugby, Its like saying cricket and baseball are like each other. I play american football (lucky for me the Student Season is on when F1 is not) and i play rugby, you need to have a differant way of thinking to play each. American football in england has about 37 Collage/university teams, which is fairly good. Senior league has about 36. So its getting more well known in the uk.

As for why its called football. God only knows, Oddly enought i call them both football and most people get what i am talking about...... sometime i add throwy or kicky at the end to help.
I believe in the chain of command, Its the chain I use to beat you till you do what i want!!!

I know the differance. My Father who is Spanish (madrid) played professional
football (soccer) He tried to make me play it as a kid and as a result grew up hating it. Oddly My son and daughter both 6 going on 7 love the game. My dad is in heaven training them as he loves the game as much as I love F1. Of course he is all over Alonso mania as is the rest of my familly, all but me.
I will continue to root for JPM, Even when he gets his lunch handed to him.

Which Alonso? Our physics lesson today was interupted when the supply teacher who was on the PC announced that Alonso had made it 2-0 for Spain. Needless to say I was confused seeing as I've heard Fernando has little interest in the game.

This reminds me, did Carlos Sainz win his bid to become Real Madrid manager?

Yes, Sawtooth-spike. I have heard of baseball: it is an almost unknown (outside Venezuela, Dominican Republic and I think, USA & Puerto Rico and some parts of Japan) variant of cricket.

I hope grandpa jgredline teaches well jgredline's daughter and son... USA was not always that bad :) : third overall in Uruguay-1930 World Cup (with a considerable scottish reinforcement).

They defeated 1-0 (and eliminated) England in Brazil-1950 World Cup, goal obtained by a centerforward player, haitian-born and black, Larry Gaetjens. Curiously, this was the first time England bothered to play in a World Cup.

I loved your story: my mother is an spaniard emigrant, too. I wonder if your father played or rooted for Atletico de Madrid, my childhood team... My seven years old son would die of envy if he had the chance to learn from a professional, as grandpa Ciro is notoriously un-futbolistic, and dad is not precisely Ronaldinho...

Hey, jhonny! 4-0. Olé.

Tom: Alonso is Xabi Alonso, player for Liverpool, a team located in a country that has borders with the southern part of Scotland. This team won a local cup last year, the England cup I think they call it, but he played only the first half.

His father, brother and himself have been players and coaches for the Real Sociedad football team in San Sebastian (or Donostia), in the Basque country.

Fernando is interested in football, he's a confessed Real Madrid supporter, if one of future Real Madrid manager wins the renault will carry the team name and shield on his nose.

sainz bid isn't so strong, he goes with another man so he could be as much as vice-manager or something like taht

Thts right there was an article in F1 racing before the world cup interviewing the drivers about football and who they are supporting. The concensus amoung the drivers is that Schumi, Fisico & Fernando are the best footie players on the grid.

Oh and the Alonso they were talking about Tom is a player called Xabi Alonso, who (i think still) plays for Liverpool FC.

Knowing me u knew this, was being sarcastic and I've just made myself look like a fool

Someone had pointed the Xabi (pronounced Jabiear isn't it) fact out but I don't care about football unless I'm playing (bad at it BTW) so I didn't realise he was a scouser. (non derogitory of course)

Sorry, I'm sure I heard that Alonso wasn't a big footy fan.?. I think DC is an Arsenal supporter.
