Lance Stroll implies something to the effect that his critics are jealous because they didn't make it to F1. Or he just says it pretty directly --
The 18-year-old, who made his debut last weekend in Melbourne, believes much of that comes from drivers who have not reached grand prix racing.

"Obviously people who are not in Formula 1 are trying to find excuses why they are not in Formula 1," he told Autosport.
Aaargh :wtf:. I really want the Stroll situation to work out for Williams but quotes like this show that, at best, Stroll has a tin ear. Perhaps this is disrupting his balance and causing the difficulties with pace and car-control.

"The new CTO at Williams, Paddy Lowe, doesn’t want to talk about where his shareholding is coming from. They don’t have to be listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange for a while, but I hear that Lowe will be acquiring the nine percent of the business which is currently owned by Sir Patrick Head. The shares are worth around $16.5 million. It is not clear whether Lowe is buying some of the shares, or whether they are being given to him…"

WILLIAMS REPORTS 2016 ANNUAL RESULTS
05 APR 2017

Williams Grand Prix Holdings PLC (WGPH, Ticker: WGF1) today announced the Group’s financial results for the year ended 31 December 2016. WGPH is the holding company of the Williams group of companies, which includes Williams Grand Prix Engineering Limited.
Group revenue increased from £125.6m in 2015 to £167.4m last year. EBITDA improved from a loss of £3.3m in 2015 to a profit of £15.5m in 2016. The performance gains reflected the continued strength of our Formula One operation, and significant growth in Williams Advanced Engineering.
The Formula One business generated revenues of £116.7m (2015: £101.5m), with an EBITDA of £12.4m (2015: £0.2m). Williams Advanced Engineering generated revenues of £36.9m (2015: £21.3m) with an EBITDA of £4.2m (2015: £2.1m).
Mike O’Driscoll, Group Chief Executive Officer, said; “Our 2016 financial results represent continued improvement, with strong revenue growth across both Formula One and Advanced Engineering. Following a complete restructuring of our business over the previous two years, both operationally and financially, we made further gains in 2016. Our Formula One division continued to operate profitably, despite enormous levels of competitive spending in what is arguably sport’s toughest financial environment. Williams Advanced Engineering, although still a developing business, continues to make excellent progress.
“Our Formula One team achieved fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship in 2016, following successive third place finishes the previous two years. Commercial rights income is paid a year in arrears, and these accounts reflect our third place in the 2015 Constructors’ Championship. We have recently made significant new appointments to our technical team, in our push to improve on-track performance and drive WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING to the front of the grid. Our team continues to attract support from some of the world’s leading companies and brands, and we are very optimistic about the overall potential for the sport, under Liberty Media’s stewardship.
“Williams Advanced Engineering made significant progress in 2016, and has continued to build and strengthen its customer base. Its project portfolio has expanded significantly over the past twelve months, which is reflected in the 74% growth in revenue over the prior year. Our expertise in battery and EV technology, coupled with our capabilities in lightweight materials, aerodynamics and systems integration offers substantial opportunities in the years ahead. We believe that Williams Advanced Engineering has a solid platform for continued expansion.
“These financial results demonstrate that we are continuing to build a stronger and more capable organisation, and a solid foundation for future sporting and commercial success.”

How many of us can say we listened to experience at 17/18. He's a teenager, the only way to learn is to make those mistakes, unfortunately.

Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: Whilst it’s been a frustrating day for everyone, it’s probably more so for other teams, because we were able to make the best of the opportunity. We didn’t run in the wet in Barcelona during the pre-season tests so we had never driven the car in the wet. It was particularly good for Lance, who has never driven any Formula One car in the wet. The small amount of running we did on the full wets in FP1, and the sets of laps on the intermediates were actually invaluable as we learnt how the car behaves in wet conditions and on wet tyres. The pace was encouraging for the car but also for Lance, who was able to drive with confidence in those conditions. I feel the worst for the fans! We have some really enthusiastic fans in China and they’ve been denied the excitement of the cars running today. From our point of view, we have a lot of homework to do ahead of qualifying and the race, which we haven’t done today, but it’s the same for everyone so that’s the challenge we face together.

Felipe Massa: There’s not much to say today! We did a few laps on the wet tyres, which felt OK in the few laps I did, but it was not really enough to understand the tyres. We had a few laps with barely anyone on track. Whilst safety is so important, it was a fairly uneventful Friday and I hope we can have nicer conditions on Saturday and Sunday for us on track, but also for the fans so they get to see the spectacle of the race!

Lance Stroll: You can’t change the weather, it is what it is, and it was such a shame for the fans that they didn’t get to see us on track. It’s obviously not ideal, as for me it was the first time here and the first time in a Formula One car in the wet, so I would have liked to have run a bit more today. The conditions were not fully wet, so I was on intermediates and, as the track was drying, it was even becoming a bit too dry for them. I only did seven laps, so there is still a lot to do. I hope there are a lot more laps to do before qualifying, as I have a lot more to learn. I am now just going to focus on tomorrow and make the best of it.
