Alonso was 0.16 off his SQ2 time in SQ3. Maybe the mediums were better? He was slower in S2 and S3 and faster is S1 ...maybe he went to hard on the softs in S1 didn't leave enough of the tire left for S2 and S3 ?
I mean I think the soft tires are just not very good because nobody really did better than medium than Norris and it was only slightly better? But also Mclaren is also very good on its tyres. Alonso gapped Stroll and beat Max so I think he did extract everything as usual. I doubt he could do much better maybe half a tenth if the tires overheated.

Nobody had any experience with how Softs would behave except Max. It was a tough ask to give them only one run with tires they hadn't used up until that point. Softs didn't look like a good tire though. A lot of sliding even from the faster guys in SQ3.
