Oh so this isn't calling Honda out? And the vibrations/oscillations were gone in FP3/Quali.
But yeah, Honda did solve the issue it seems, whatever they changed.

Posts like the one a couple of posts above are why Honda fans who've come to Aston Martin Honda, are touchy about things that Aston Martin fans who've come to Aston Martin Honda (yes, this is a new partnership), say. There's quite an undercurrent of when the car goes well, it's because of the great chassis in spite of terrible Honda, and when it goes badly, it's because terrible Honda are so bad all is lost. It's even been said no chassis development could realistically be done whilst the engine was so bad (so how about all the current updates?). Of course the engine is very poor, and yes it is a concern because engine development and lead-times are long (and updates can only be made when permission is granted). But, the chassis was very poor too, the drivers have been complaining, and the team even said approximately half the deficit comes from the chassis, but these facts are glossed over or often not even mentioned at all. The team has a works engine deal, with the company that powered four drivers championships, which were the only ones the Mercedes didn't win in the turbo hybrid engine era. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but don't underestimate Honda. How about wishing them well, and seeing how it goes?

These people are impatient and don't appreciate the process Honda goes through to achieve success, which usually starts with failure. Hence why I no longer translate or bring new information. I'm looking forward to a talk by former Honda Managing Director Masashi Yamamoto, who was the Honda consultant for RBPT, on the latest Honda F1 developments. He is going to have some interesting things to say, always does.

I’m genuinely worried about Honda; the ghosts of the past keep feeding my fears. It won’t matter at all if Honda keeps failing or only improving by hundredths of a second every two years.

The ghosts of when they just re-joined F1 10 years ago or when they had the best PU for 6 years? I'm confused.

Around four years, it was the final spec they rushed that really delivered the performance, and they were pretty close together with Ferrari and Mercedes. It's anyone's guess which was really the best at what point. The PU freeze certainly helped to retain the engine situation. (Including crippling Renault)

A Honda spokesman said fans would be disappointed if they expect a 50 bhp gain from the engine upgrade. If older rumours are true that the Honda upgrade would bring 0.5 of a second, then that is around 30 bhp?

Orihara, while discussing the engine updates they will be bringing, mentioned combustion chamber design, pre-chamber design, friction reduction, and reliabelity improvements. All of these relate to the ice.

There's no question of adding more power to the electric motor; it's simply about longer operating life and better charging capabilities. This depends on how good the car is. Perhaps engine power and speeds will also have an effect. Or, it could be possible to achieve the same speed with less deployment due to engine power.

In short, if the updates are to the ice and add 50 hp, Honda could even become the most powerful engine on the track. That would be a truly significant improvement. Full performance without limitations and a little more power thanks to durability would be the most reasonable expectation, I think.

However, mastering new fuels and how to work with them could also lead to major leaps. But judging by Orihara's statements, there's no such leap. Step by step.

It's true the engine remains the biggest limitation still, however they have more margin to improve with the chassis as well. There wasn't a single corner where they were close to Lando's fastest Q2 lap with regards to minimum apex speed. The faster bits you can still put it down to the engine a bit, but the slower corners like T1, the chicane, T12 and the hairpins are not so power-limited.

From some rough summations of the full throttle parts, there's about 1-1.2 seconds from the engine, which leaves about 1-1.2 seconds to the chassis in terms of deficit.

You should not compare Aston to the top teams this season.. best to compare against the RBs, Audis. They are very competitive in the corners against those teams. Now with a better engine, drivability/engine braking/cornering speeds will be better. Then you take into better energy management throughout the circuit that comes as well.

RBPT hired ex Honda F1 and Mercedes F1 engineers when Honda said they were leaving...
RBPT and Audi had been working on PU development much longer than the current Honda PU team.
All PU teams have had PU issues, dnf's including DNS's. Honda will catch up, but they don't need the most powerful PU if chassis/aero/tyre/fuel window is optimum. There's a lot of players in a team and making sure it's a team

How much can be attributed to getting the tyres in the right window, it seems like black magic or just luck sometimes
