Best to describe the two is Ricciardo goes backwards in races and Vergne goes forward in general.
Keep an eye next time Ricciardo does a blistering lap for Qual then watch how within 5-10 laps Vergne is right behind him.

My own wish is Kimi vs Vettel in the same equal machinery, that would be a dream line-up.
Wonder how much of that is car setup, with Ricciardo chasing one lap pace with his setup and Vergne setting up for the race?

Yea it´s a bit strange, Ricciardo on average is over a second faster in Quali.

This is how i look at it,

Vergne has a much bigger gap to close then Ricciardo does in terms of how they stack up to each other in Quali and Race.
Vergne is marginally better in races while Ricciardo is much better in Quali. Hence, if i was RBR, i´d take Ricciardo.

You got the pace, just need to work on the racing a tad,

Webber won't miss Vettel

Mark Webber, retiring from formula one at the end of the season, has admitted he will not miss his teammate Sebastian Vettel. The Australian appeared on the BBC's highly popular British motoring programme Top Gear this week, where he admitted the sport is now "very different" to when he debuted over 200 grands prix ago.

Asked about the era of heavily-degrading Pirelli tyres, Webber told presenter Jeremy Clarkson: "But that's the way it is. We've got to learn and get on with it, but you've got to be able to push. In formula one it's about us boys being absolutely on the limit all the time. Or it should be."

Webber, who turns 37 later this month, also admitted he will not miss reigning triple consecutive world champion German Vettel, his teammate at Red Bull.

"Um -- am I going to miss Seb?" he pondered. "Probably not a huge amount, no. I think in a competitive environment, there's always going to be a bit of needle; there's a lot of history between us as well."

That 'history' came to a head in Malaysia this year, when Vettel disobeyed a team order and passed Webber for victory. Asked by Clarkson if he felt like punching Vettel afterwards, Webber said: "My dad always says you shouldn't hit boys, mate."

Revenge on the track is sweeter: Webber did a lap in Top Gear's famous 'reasonably priced' Suzuki Liana, and pipped Vettel's best time.

Rubbish, JEV didn't catch Dan until there where 2 laps left at Hungary and the reason why he keeps catching Dan is he starts on new tires due to missing q3 as he's too slow!

That's not a valid excuse because Ricciardo has the option to not run in q3 to have the same amount of tyres as JEV. He chose to run, even running on the faster tyre in hopes of gaining grid position but in doing so failed to capitalise on his starting position.

All it proves is that the Pirelli tires suck, bridgestones + DRS would be a much more authentic racing series than what we have now!

If Dan was truly faster in race trim then the fact that he starts on tyres a few laps old should not cause him to finish behind his team mate in the race. It's not like the tyres Dan start on have done half a Grand Prix -they've done a few laps in Q3 most of the time. That's not exactly an enormous disadvantage. I think JEV is the faster driver in the races and I don't think the tyres have all that much to do with it.

The tires have everything to do with it, to suggest otherwise is just silly!

Why just look into one race? Why not look over 1,5 years instead?
The facts are that Ricciardo is better in Qualifying but ends the race in a lower position then Vergne on average.

All it proves is the strategic tyre advantage of failing to make Q3, (ignoring the several times Dan has been passed after car failures while in the top 10), we've been seeing this an awful lot lately from the mid field teams who successfully leap frog top 10 qualifiers using tire strategy.

Personally Im over the high deg Pirellis, having to baby sit your tires for 20 laps is not racing!

Different strategy just means a different way to do the race.
Just because you start on mediums doesn´t mean you will automatically jump people.
If you make one less stop then you have actually gained something. But running your tires in different order is just a different strategy that might or might not work.

And FYI, Vergne has had just as many bad moments that has taken points away from him.

Edit: look at this,

New article by James Allen

I read a rumor earlier that Red Bull have offered Kimi 18-20 Million in response to a Ferrari offer for Kimi's services. Vettel only earns 16 million according to that same report (it came from a German Newspaper) so if its true amazingly Kimi may end up making more cash than Seb.

All this seems to have transcended into a bidding war for Kimi between RB, Ferrari and Lotus. I would say Lotus would need him most, then Ferrari with RB the least. Lotus have neither the cash or another top flight driver to fall back on if Kimi leaves, they would have to gamble on a JEV, Di Resta or Hulkenberg to lead the team if Kimi left (unless Romain pulls it together on a consistent basis)

Ferrari have Alonso who is arguably the best driver on the grid, but Allen for what its worth thinks Ferrari may be at a disadvantage next year in terms of the new regs and Mercedes and RB are looking stronger. A Kimi/ Alonso dream team could swing the balance and drag better results out the car, you cannot find two more consistent points scorers than those two.

Red Bull have a ready made replacement in Riccardo, who has at least potential and youth on his side. Riccardo is not Lewis or Seb, he is no instant sensation that is a ready made seemingly effortless title challenger given the right car. However, he has time to work on his sub-par race craft to further flatter his great qualifying pace. Kimi is the better option, but there is a chance in the long run they could get value out of Riccardo as well. They have Seb for at least another 2 years, so they have a top flight driver nailed down even if it does appear he may leave at some point.

It makes for great speculation and I am not convinced Rosberg will not shop around at some stage, Ferrari were rumored to be interested in Nico before the Kimi talk starter. I think Alonso to RB was pure grandstanding, but I would love substance to those claims.

If I am to guess, I would predict this

Red Bull - Seb/Kimi

Ferrari - Alonso/? - Possibly Hulky

Lotus - Romain/JEV

I think Riccardo will stay at Toro Rosso if he does not get the Red Bull seat.
