Re: McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

Its great to see McLaren are now looking at aero performance on only the third day. Seems they have got reliability (touch wood) sorted on their first day. Being a McLaren fan it makes me laugh at how Red Bull (and other Renault engined cars) are struggling to even get a few laps done let alone look at aero stuff.

Towards the end of the session we did a few installation laps. On the last one the tyres lost a lot of temperature, it caught me by surprise when I accelerated out of the corner, shifting up from third to fourth on a straight line, and suddenly the car snapped and I went off.

Good luck Sauber with Sutil, If I was team principal i would sit him out for the last day. A guy with some much experience crashing a car, in a period were spare parts are really scarce. Totally unacceptable!
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."

It seems to me that in McLaren aren't having any issue in getting to grips with the car and with the power unit, we'll see is this is a trend during the season.

TJ13...
I have to say, the McLaren is looking by some margin the best balanced car. Having spent the day walking the circuit, whether in the hands of world champion Jenson Button or rookie Kevin Magnusson, the MP4-29 was cornering as though it was on rails.
The last few seasons, it seems like the general impressions from observers at the track have been better indicators of performance than the times themselves. So this is good to hear, especially on only the second day of running.

Kevin said this to the Danish media about his time:

said the same, they were getting hard time when they announced not to be there but who's the fool now?

Why do you think it's an upside to only start finding out these issues in the next test? At least Red Bull and Torro Rosso have some time to change their packaging to deal with the car-specific cooling issues. Lotus will have to be either super conservative (not good for pace) or deal with the same kind of problems in a much shorter timeframe. I don't see any upsides to this.

nobody was talking about upsides. it's about the suggested amount of 'loss' that lotus would have compared to the rest of the field, which, unfortunately for the rest of the renault-powered engines, has been greatly reduced.

lotus will have clearly seen the packaging of the toro rosso and redbull, so if they figure cooling is an issue, then they can bring more attention there without even having run here.

redbull didnt even run more then 3 laps! and they're gone, home! if lotus appears at the test in Bahrain, they only need to do 3 more laps then redbull to compare their loss!

My spies indicate that Torro Rosso are actually using a 1982 spec Hart 415T - possibly the one that Derek Warwick used to set fastest lap in the 1982 race at Brands Hatch. Whooosh, blaaaasssst, BANG!

It sounds like it, at least...

If that is the case, maybe they should skip all the tests and just show up in Oz! They can incorporate all the developments without the trouble of actually running the car!

Last year they needed only 45min. to change it!
As for the engine swap instead of 2hrs. last year now they need a whooping 6 hrs. to do that !!
So if are doing that at FP1 you could miss FP2, or if you are at FP3 you could miss Qualy, so it`s a very important year in terms of reliability of the power-train ...

Re: 2014 Testing - Jerez 28-31 Jan

Post

This is my first post here after many years of following both this site and F1.

The testing issues and the messing around with points gave me an idea. Could there be 'points' awarded for the places 10, 11, 12 with 10 = 1, 11 = 2, 12 = 3 etc. These would then correspond to testing laps available to that team. Obviously the teams coming near the back (Marussia, Caterham) would probably have more than they needed and would be able to sell them to the teams higher up. More testing for everyone and the poorer teams have something they can raise some money from.

This has obviously not been thought through properly as it only occurred to me about 5 minutes ago so be gentle.
